Food for thought- Animal Production

The bright golden “M”, is easily paired with the world renowned fast food industry of McDonalds. Since its start in the 1940’s, what was once a small barbeque restaurant flourished to become one of the top fast food industries in the world. Much of its success is not just due to its delicious fries and hamburgers but its crafty advertising. McDonalds advertises itself throughout the world, making it rare to find a person who is unfamiliar with the company. One particular advertisement shown in Europe displaying a cow made of organic vegetables while eating a crop of lettuce is quite controversial compared to America’s food industry. In America the reality of inhumane animal treatment increases in order …show more content…
Food industries in Europe prefer a more natural alternative called organic farming. Organic farming involves the use of no drugs or hormones in the production of livestock. Famers rely on the natural cycle of their livestock in order to breed. This type of farming is healthier in comparison to factory farming due to less risk of resistant bacteria. In 2013 the European commission released that there were no genetically modified animals or related products on the European market. With the help of the EFSA (European Food & Safety Authority), risk factors such as overall animal and human health are evaluated before releasing genetically modified animals on the European market (GM Animals). A unique benefit in organic farming is the caring of the animals throughout the process of being breed. Being organic, animals such as cattle are allowed to graze in open pastures, receiving plenty of fresh air and sunlight. Compared to factory farming, most animals are subjected to live in close quarters with little or no sunlight throughout their whole entire lives. Cattle are fed based on their natural diets of either pasture, forage, or crops grown organically (Animal Welfare). Most important are the strict rules of ensuring preventive health care practices. Throughout being breed, farmers ensure a stress and disease free environment. The use of antibiotics are only used if completely necessary, if used the animal isn’t considered organic anymore (Animal Welfare). The end product of organic farming is also very nutritional for humans, providing overall less fat content, healthy-omega 3 fats, and four times more vitamin E compared to cattle fed on corn diets

...Animal Ethics The issue regarding the morality on whether or not people should consume meat has been debated for several decades. Factory farms, where animals are raised in filthy conditions, pumped with antibiotics and growth hormones, and fed a diet that includes animal bi-products, are viewed by animal rights activists to be inhumane and torturous. Since the beginning of time, the human race has been consuming meat. In the book of Genesis, it says “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything”.
