Inquisitr's Argument Analysis

In Spring Valley, South Carolina on October 26th, Officer Ben Fields sparked controversy all across America. Through the internet, TV, and daily conversations one can come across very different opinions of the event that took place among Officer Fields, and a teenage female student. The student was asked to leave the classroom by first teacher, followed by an administrator, and lastly confronted by Officer Fields. The controversy lies in whether or not the officer used excessive force or was within in his rights as he escorted the student from the classroom. Inquisitr news and CNN news have provided their readers with two very different reports. For example the language throughout the article in Inquisitr has a derogatory sound, “Fields then less-dragged and more-flung the student down the aisle between the other desks toward the front of the class. Sort of like a sack of potatoes.” (Hough) The language chosen for this description makes the officer sound like a violent and forceful being, with a lack of evidence as to what brought the officer to this point. This gives the reader a visual of an innocent person being beat rather then removed from a classroom. Each word the author choses for that sentence make the Officer out to be an abuser rather than an authority figure. This language allows the authors opinion to shine strongly through to the reader. Very much unlike this source, in the CNN article the author’s opinions aren’t present as to cloud the reader from making a personal judgement of the event and on the …show more content…
Contrary to the Inquisitr article where only a negative view is portrayed of the Officer, the CNN report gives history where the officer has done well with kids around the same age group as the girl that took part in the incident. One of the headings in the report, “He has received accolades for his work with students” (Yan, Conlon, Newsome), and then goes on to describe the award that was presented to the Officer. Along with this CNN provides a student report that comes to Fields’ defense, showing that reader that this Officer isn’t an all-around bad guy, as the Inquisitr report seems to persuade the reader to believe this. This adds to the information provided so that the reader can form a better opinion about the situation which is the point of the CNN article, unlike the Inquisitr article where you will not find positive reinforcement regarding Field’s previous
