Although, the main aim of social media is to allow people to stay connected with other people, it does not seem like that. Nowadays, many families, friends, and people think of it in a different way; they believe that social media separate relationships and people. Especially, those who are already suffering from this issue will find it more and more hard to give way to face-to-face communication. Like all things there are those out there who looks to use things for bad purposes. This puts us in a predicament where our children have access to the entire world before they’re truly ready to experience it. This means we need to help teach our children what is and isn’t safe on the internet and for us as parents to also recognize what is harmful and to attempt to protect our children. The dangers they face are often cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying, and a “no privacy” zone. Being able to recognize these things and teach our children how to handle them will make for a much safer social media experience and an all-around more fun one. A threat to children that can lead to many harmful outcomes is cyber-stalking. This also includes harassment over the internet. Many times cyber-stalking is performed by a jealous ex-boyfriend/girlfriend who becomes obsessive and unable to move on from the relationship. Sometimes this can be an adult posing as a child in an attempt to lure them to their home. This is a particularly dangerous form of cyber-stalking that has very potentially dangers outcomes. Many times these people go years without being caught because they cause the victim to be in fear of telling what happened and they often times return to the abuse. ...Negative Effects of Social Media Christine M. Boyd University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Social media is something that has become a part of the lives of millions. Every day we see people constantly posting on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some think that these media outlets unite people together, but I’m beginning to think the contrary is closer to the truth. It’s common to see multiple people in a room glued to their phones instead of actually engaging with each other. In this paper, I will investigate why people have developed an obsession with social media, how social media creates a false reality, and how social media can be harmful to our mental health. There are a variety of reasons why people have developed an obsession with social media, making it harder to cut ties with it. According to the article Technology Addiction in Adolescents by Vivek Agarwal and Sujit Kumar Kar, “Companies making mobile phones, made them compatible for other technologies like – games, videos, internet browsing and many other applications which facilitate their wide circulation and making them more addicting objects” (pg. 171). When people have constant internet access through their smart phones, it makes it extremely difficult to avoid social media. Smart phones usually vibrate or make a noise when you get a Facebook or Twitter notification, which can increase your likelihood of checking the application. ...Social Media – Helpful or Harmful? Pamela Cole Dr. Katrina Zaleski English 090 09/05/2012 With the advancement of technology and the rise of social media, would you consider it helpful or harmful in today’s society? Everywhere you go it’s inevitable to see someone either texting, tweeting, or on Facebook. No matter how you feel about it, social networking seems to be the source of communication today. Social networking is very helpful in many ways such as communicating, searching for employment, and employment verification. We are able to communicate and search for people whom we have lost contact with through Facebook, texting and instant messaging. Individuals can even search for employment, post and send resumes without ever stepping into a Human Resource department. The negative side of social media is that you actually don’t know if you’re in contact with the correct person when you are communicating online. Through tweeting, burglars and robbers can predict when they can most likely burglarize your home when you are not there. Social dating sites like Christian Mingle and Black People Meet are sites for meeting people of the same beliefs and character as you. Anyone can join these sites but how can you verify this information without ever meeting them? What about the old time way of courtship and meeting people? Another social networking website that seems to be harmful is Facebook. With Facebook you are able...

Advantages and Disadvantages of Media

...Social media can actually do more harm than good Today, social media is everywhere. Playing a big role in people’s life, social media has made interactions among people easier. Although social media is so easy to use, it brings us many problems as well. In other words, social media has been an essential means of communication, but it can be harmful intentionally or unintentionally. Since we now live in this modern internet society, social media users should think twice before publicizing their posts on the internet. The website called CyberBullyHotline indicates that 4500 kids commit suicide each year due to cyber bullying. An example of unintentional harm with social media is seen in Sue Scheff’s recent writing about “accidental” cyberbullying for the Huffington Post. She describes incidents where teens say things to others, usually online, that are not intended to be hurtful, but are experienced as such. Even though it is not our objective, our words can be taken out of context by others when they are read and regurgitated, amplifying our digital footprint. This can happen offline as well, of course, but technology certainly makes it easier to obscure actual intent. Many of us know from experience that social media often leads to more frequent misunderstandings as communication occurs without important facial expressions, vocal intonations, or other interpretive behavioral cues that provide color and context to what is being conveyed. I agree that it is common for teens...

Explain Plato's Allegory Of The Cave

...Social media is something we occupy ourselves with most of the time. The time we give to being on social media is harmful. I'm not talking about harmful in a social or physical way, but more in a mental aspect. Subconciously, what we see and hear affects the way we think. Without even knowing it the things we see from the internet do impact our thoughts and opinions in either a negative or positive way. I myself am a user of social media, but I believe my awareness of how social media does affect me as a person and the things I say and do, sets me apart from those that have become prisoner's of the cave; the Twitter cave or maybe the Facebook cave. Whichever cave it may be, a person's knowledge of knowing what something they use everyday is doing to them, and correcting that problem is knowledge itself. Nobody thinks about what being on social media is really doing to them when they log onto a site and start reading people's posts and seeing people's pictures, but it is affecting our brain, and what we start to consider right and wrong. Our thoughts our easily influenced without us even...

Media is all around us, from the shows on television to the books we read each day. However even with its perks, it has both positive and negative effects.
