John Stoltenberg's Model Of Sexual Identity

I'm in full agreement in John Stoltenberg's notion that male sexual identity is entirely a political and ethical construction. Men should refuse the current model of masculine sexual identity, and learn one built on a different set of ethics that is not based on female objectification and dominance.

Stoltenberg argues that we are not born belonging to one or the other of two sexes, but instead we are multisexed. Each persons genitalia is developed from exactly the same piece of tissue. “If you look at all the variables in nature that are said to determine human “sex,” you can’t possibly find one that will unequivocally split the species into two.” Gender is a socially constructed idea and while biological sex is a part of gender, it is not finite. In other words, being born with a penis or vagina does not biologically determine who you’ll be later on in life. Men are taught that women are less than men and should be viewed as objects they can control. “Men currently learn a sexual behaviour and identity in which the person to whom acts are done is seen as responsible for those acts”. According to Stoltenberg, this is a key component to explaining why men rape. He especially focuses on the problem with sex and pornography. He argues that the sex industry and male sexuality is corrupted in the aim of trying to shape a man’s identity as different from a woman’s, to enable men to feel like real men.
