...Taylor Luongo Matthews English 101 A85 10/2/2012 My reading response is on David Foster’s speech “This is Water”. Fosters point is, not insulting, but explaining how to “think”. He gives example on how people think in different ways. “Blind Certainty” is another point he runs down stating how people see one way and one way only. He uses the phase “lens of self” as a way of how people receive the world. To alter this he brings up “Learning how to think” meaning “exercising some control over how and what you think”. I’m in college now so I presume that I already know how to think. Maybe my way of thinking is or could be the hardest or easiest way of thinking. In his speech he doesn’t want people to be insulted about what he is talking about. Just to look or “think” about it through a different prospective. I know the way I study and learn. I know the way I study and learn materials may be different for a different person. My friend finds the easiest ways to get his work done while still getting good grades. I on the other hand I need to have a hard copy of the material and look over it many times just to thouroughly know the material. Before Robert Sternberg became one of the most recognized men in psychology, he received a “C” in his college psychology class and discouragement from his instructor. Thomas Edison made numerous unsuccessful attempts before finally inventing the light bulb. Years of hard work and failed prototypes led to the Wright brothers’ innovative invention of the airplane, which changed today’s world. Set against the backdrop of World War I, a touching love story quietly blossoms against the odds of circumstance and mismatched personalities. Facing a script revolving almost entirely around only two people, director John Huston adeptly develops a third viable character by filming the majority of the movie on location in Africa: nature. Rosie and Charlie must contend with nature throughout the film. As Rosie learns to love the parts of Charlie she cannot control or change, so she learns when to fight nature and when to give into it. The underlying theme of The African Queen is a lesson in the futility of fighting nature. Rosie has spent ten years in Africa doing missionary work with her brother; yet, after all this time, the movie opens during a church service where the native villagers appear to be as uncomprehending as to what is going on as if it were the Sayers’ first day there. This is the first evidence of Rosie’s inability to accept she cannot change nature. In this example, she cannot change the nature of the African culture. We all got ringworm from some kittens and had to rub Pond's Extract on our arms and legs night and morning, and my father rolled over in a canoe with all his clothes on; but outside of that the vacation was a success and from then on none of us ever thought there was any place in the world like that lake in Maine. We returned summer after summer--always on August 1st for one month. I have since become a salt-water man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the evening make me wish for the placidity of a lake in the woods. A few weeks ago this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week's fishing and to revisit old haunts. I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train windows. On the journey over to the lake I began to wonder what it would be like. I wondered how time would have marred this unique, this holy spot--the coves and streams, the hills that the sun set behind, the camps and the paths behind the camps. Look at the other girls and boys or just in a general direction? Too late, there is no time to think. It is time to climb. In David Foster Wallace’s memoir “Forever Overhead”, Wallace depicted how maturing can be scary, but worth the strife through his great description of his 13th birthday. The setting I s describes in such detail and portrays the theme in many different ways. Three places that the theme is portrayed is when he completely bypasses his parents on his walk to the diving board, when he sees the “girl-women, women”, and the preparation and the, assumption of, act of jumping off of the diving board after contemplation. As he recalls himself at a swimming pool for his 13th birthday, he sees the high board. He knows that he and his family will be leaving soon, so he makes the quick decision to go get in line and do it. As he gets out going to get in the line, he walks right by them without saying a word. “Get out now and go past your parents, who are sunning and reading, not looking up. People who see their ideas through, however unpragmatic it may be considered by others are the ones who have truly made a difference. History is replete with examples of people who were perceived as crazy, illogical and even insane by laymen, yet when their ideas were sedulously worked upon, by the creator , day after day, combined with long hours of toil, the result was nothing, short of marvelous. Lets’s take the example of the Indian freedom struggle fought by Gandhiji on the basis of Satyagraha. It was very difficult for the Britishers to assume that India would be freed one day under the leadership of a loin cloth covered ordinary looking man without the use of weapons or bloodshed. The reason that Indian freedom could be achieved was the unflagging determination of Gandhiji and the uncommon methodology used of winning freedom by peace and not bloodshed. Looking not far, I can recall the example of Galileo who was reviled and persecuted by the Church authorities for challenging the existing norms that pervaded the society that time. Galileo ‘s fierce determination , not to give up on his ideas even during harsh criticism paved the way for modern space research. Another convincing example is of the Wright Brothers. Back in High School I never really thought it was great but it was everything. In the play The Glass Menagerie, many characteristics were shown in different people. There were primarily four main characters in the play: Amanda, Laura, Tom, and Jim. Each character had there own original issue in the story, which makes the play so entirely complex. What makes the play interesting is putting those characters together and creating inside moral and conflict. As a result, everybody still appears to be an “outcast in his or her own world” In every Tennessee William play he always uses symbolism in order to develop characters and to display the recurring themes of the play. These various symbols appear throughout the entire piece, and they are usually disguised as objects or imagery. The title The Glass Menagerie was named because of Laura’s glass animal collection. She had many different animals that symbolized your everyday people that she can not be a part of. One of the animals was a unicorn which was a “symbol of Laura” by representing the idea of being different. ...Shortly after dropping out of the Trotskyist movement in 1978, I embarked on a systematic reading project of the world?s greatest novels. Since I had made the decision to begin writing fiction myself, I wanted to learn the craft from the masters. Additionally, I wanted a change of pace from the hard-core Marxist literature I had been reading for 11 years. (Within two years, however, I had returned to radical politics, largely under the impetus of the Central American revolution.) I soon discovered that some of these masterpieces left me cold, including those written by Henry James, Joseph Conrad and especially Jane Austen. Although I would never deny that they were great writers, their words did not resonate with me. After reading 50 or so pages of ?Pride and Prejudice,? I found myself wondering what all the hype was about. I was left cold by an endless round of country balls, dinner parties and arch dialogue that always sounded self-conscious and somewhat artificial. To illustrate: Elizabeth Bennett, the major character who is based on Jane Austen herself, is in one of her frequent 'cutting' exercises with Fitzwilliam D?Arcy--reminiscent of an old Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy movie. Like Hepburn and Tracy, these two spend most of their time hating each other until they finally discover that they really are in love. (I myself had a different take on the matter.
