Introduction

There are so many electronics due to the technology age and today they continue to keep

coming. Here in the United States we have so many choices of stores to get the equipment we

want. The best store in my opinion is Best Buy due to the convenience, choice of goods, and

customer service. This is not by chance as they have been around for a good amount of time

and are well known. There are different performance measures that indicate how well a store

like this operates and will continue to operate. The following discussion will show how the

degree of operating leverage, return on investment (ROI), economic value added (EVA), and

inventory turnover ratio is computed. You will also see how the store finished up for the 2012

fiscal year.

Degree of Operating Leverage and ROI

You must first know what the definition of the degree of operating leverage and ROI is

before you can actually begin to know how to compute them. “The degree of operating

leverage defined is a type of leverage ratio summarizing the effect a particular amount of

operating leverage has on a company's earnings before interest and taxes” according to

Investopedia (2012). A return on investment also defined by Investopedia (2012) “is a

performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the

efficiency of a number of different investments”. Table 3-1 will illustrate the numbers in

reference to the degree of operating leverage for Best Buy fiscal year 2012.

ROI Return on Investment
= gain from investment-cost of investment/cost of investment

Operating leverage
= % change in ebit/% change in sales

Inventory turnover ratio
= sales/inventory
