The Israelite people plead for a king of their own and they had several throughout the Old Testament. David was known as a wonderful King, and a man after God’s own heart. When King David stepped down, the reign was passed to his son Solomon. God asked Solomon what he wanted and Solomon asked for wisdom so he could be a great leader. God granted Solomon his desire and he became known as the worlds wisest man. Solomon led the people of Israel for forty years. As his reign came to an end, his successor was his son Rehoboam. This was the beginning to the end of Israel's unity. The people of Israel presented King Rehoboam with a petition at his inauguration to be a more lenient king and to be kinder than his father. Rehoboam consumed by the feeling of power explained to the people that he would rule stricter than his father. The Israelites were not happy with his response and they abandoned him as their king and turned against him. Instead of trying to reconcile with the people, King Rehoboam foolishly decided to listen to his peers and separated the kingdom as a solution to the problem. Ultimately, the decision of one man resulted in consequences that would everlastingly change the nation. …show more content…

Biblical & Secular Views on Counseling

...Running head: Biblical & Secular Views Biblical & Secular Views on Counseling John Smith Liberty University Abstract Whether a counselor comes from a strong Christian background, or a secular one, the goals of the professional should remain in the best interests of the client. Still, it remains important where the views of that counselor originated from and where the source of their motivation and ethical standards are derived. This paper attempts to compare and contrast the viewpoints of secular and biblical worldviews, as it relates to the counseling profession. Biblical & Secular Views on Counseling No matter what philosophical background counselors come from, the theme of their work should remain the same: It is all about the client. Whether a counselor uses the Code of Ethics adopted by the American Counseling Association, (2005) or the code adopted by the American Association of Christian Counselors, (2004) the goal of the professional still need to keep the client’s best interests at heart. Still, with this thought in mind, Christian and secular groups differ in the ways in which they go about not only helping clients, but how they define their perspective roles in the exchanges between the therapist and the client. In order to accurately evaluate the ways in which Christians view the role of the counselor, it is first important to go to the source of their opinions of the matter;...

The Story Behind the Palms

...Farm Lessons One Step Poems Prayer USA Historical The Story Behind The Psalms by Dr. Jack Hyles PREFACE There are three books in the Bible from which I read every day—the Psalms, the Proverbs and the book of Acts. I read the Psalms for love, the Proverbs for wisdom and the book of Acts for power. These three things—love, wisdom and power have for years been on the top of my prayer list. One day while meditating on one of the Psalms, I found myself wondering where the author was when he wrote it, what the circumstances were surrounding its writing and what exactly prompted the author to compose such a masterpiece. I fled to the library of my memory and the refuge of my commentaries until my temporary search became long research. This venture was so enjoyable that I traveled the historical path of another Psalm, then another, then another, which soon led to a series of Bible studies at the First Baptist Church of Hammond on the conditions and circumstances surrounding the writing of each of the Psalms. It makes our study richer as we stand beside the author as he writes and as we feel his heartbeat, watch his tears, enjoy his laughter and join in his praise. May the author beg scholastic mercy of the reader. The following words were not penned to be examined by the microscope of the scholar but rather to be enjoyed by the study of the saint. With lovingkindness, a prayerful spirit and a desire to bless, let me lead you into the Psalms, the songbook of Israel...
