Leadership and management are two things that get compared often. Some people can have both skill sets while others may only have one or the other. Management is where the manager has a set of tasks and tells his subordinates what to do. The subordinates usually then do those tasks in return for their salary. It is a clear cut, simple process of management disseminating tasks to lower levels. The book references good management as it “brings about order and stability by formulating plans and objectives, designing structures and procedures, monitoring results against plans, and taking corrective action when necessary” (Larson & Gray, 2011). This is a perfect description of what management is, boring in my opinon. While it does its job and ensures all tasks are complete, it does not inspire. Leadership is what inspires, you can take those same tasks give them to the same subordinate from a manager with true leadership and those tasks will be done more carefully and possibly quicker. “Strong leaders can compensate for their managerial weaknesses by having trusted assistants who oversee and manage the details of the project” (Larson & Gray, 2011). So while some leaders might not be able to organize each task specifically to manage their people, they will make up for it with others willing to help out because of their leadership. The balance of the two skill sets is the best combination because you want to be able to gain followers not just subordinates doing the job because they have to. On the other hand, you also want to make sure you can manage the processes of the job and not just rely on your charisma and others to make sure things are getting done properly. Coming from the military I have seen all types of managers and leaders. I have had firsthand accounts of the management type, by the books, not inspiring just come into work and make sure the tasks
