As the child of a librarian who learned to read at the age of just 3, I have read numerous books, many of which that have greatly affected my life. Yet no other stands out quite so strongly as Libba Bray’s Going Bovine, a tale of a high school boy who is suddenly afflicted by a fatal neurodegenerative disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob’s disease and wanders across the country in search of a cure. As a child, I read almost continuously, but as I advanced through the grades of school and had to read more and more textbooks and English assignments, reading slowly lost its joy and became a chore to me.
