...Loose Change Maybe you’re not in the habit of making friends of strangers. Maybe you are. There are many types of people even in a single society and you might not discover how many strange individuals that are walking around – maybe looking up to a person like you. Loose Change is a short story written by Andrea Levy. A middle-aged woman is the first person narrator in the story. She is a Londoner, and she has a clear image of a Londoner’s way of being. They are all the same to her. She indirectly tells about how she is being prejudiced against all Londoners; when she asks if anyone has change in the lavatory, the following sentence is: "Everyone seemed to leave the place at once – all of them Londoners I was sure of it" (p. 1, l. 10). This shows she is indirectly labelling Londoners for being miserly and for being indifferent when somebody needs a little help. All she needed were some coins for the tampon machine in that her period was two days earlier than expected. Only a single person remains behind in the lavatory – and of course she is not a Londoner. Her name is Laylor and she comes from Uzbekistan, which is a country in Central Asia. The first person narrator does not know that: "Was that the Balkans? Spoken in first narrative provides the reader to place themselves in the shoes of the characters. The story sets in a small town in Jamaica, where a body was brought ashore after the Hurricane Charlie. In 1951, Hurricane Charlie killed more than 150 people in Jamaica. However in this case, that didn’t happen, “a murderer was on the loose” Hurricane Charlie was not affiliated with this death. Someone killed this woman, and that person was in the small rural town of Jamaica, where everyone is a suspect. The woman was in a water tank, where she drowned before washed ashore. ...Perfect? Not for long. - Commentary by Kerri McDonald The genre of my story is romance; however it changes slightly nearer to the end of my story into a horror. I’d liked to have read this book because I like reading about romance and horror separately, so the two ideas together would be interesting for me. I think that people in high school and college from the age of 13-20 would mostly like this story, particularly for female readers as they like romance more than male do. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re married, single or engaged, this story can entertain the reader and make them want to read on. ...The Stones Cry Out: Analytical Essay In Hikaru Okuizumi's book, "The Stones Cry Out", we follow a man named Manase through his life after the war. Although this seems like just a look on a mans life, there are many themes that tie us in. Hikaru uses many literary elements to develop those themes. Four of those elements are complication, false assumptions, flashbacks, and foreshadowing. Although there are many key themes, the two I noticed the most were the psychological effects of war and family complications due to the loss of a loved-one. Complications are defined as obstacles that increase tension. In the beginning of the book, the complications would be when Manase is faced with his memories of the time he was in the cave with the captain during the war, "He did not want to remember-Manase understood that very well. Even though he could taste his fear, he needed only to remind himself that he was lying on a soft mattress, not a cold bed of rocks."(28) The effects the war had on him were so immense that every night he would have nightmares of it.
