The image of masculinity and its definitive fragility have become more rampant in North America through advertisements and mass media. “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” by Ernest Hemingway offers a critical analysis of the use of violence as a testament of one’s manhood and explores a common-ground that will always delineate man: woman. Along with the short story, these ideas will be further developed through “What's Love Got to Do with It? An Evolutionary Analysis of ‘The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,’” and “Hemingway's ‘Francis Macomber’ in Pirandellian and Freudian Perspectives.” A lack of violence in Francis Macomber paints him as the weaker man in this short story. The bold, gruff exterior of Wilson is parallel to what America used to define as manly. These two characters find that their manliness, or lack thereof, can always be overlooked when they rejoice over a woman’s misfortune. The aforementioned ideas insist that the obsession with idealized gender-roles is unrealistic in the American ethos as it is never satisfactory and often a threat to others as they are insecure in their own positions. Parece difícil para algunas personas diferenciar el límite que separa las personas y las ideas (especialmente cuando las ideas son religiones). Algunas personas han adoptado e interiorizado unas ideas con tal profundidad que no son capaces de distinguirlas de su ego. No son capaces de reconocer que sólo son ideas, y consideran que son parte de su identidad. Por tanto cuando se cuestionan sus ideas, se lo toman como un ataque y una falta de respeto personal. En el momento que una persona exige respeto por sus ideas, está (irónicamente) faltando al respeto y a la libertad de expresión. Esa persona está pidiendo que sus ideas tengan una consideración especial y que los demás deben censurar sus ideas para que esa persona no se sienta ofendida. In the text “Fight Club” we follow the unnamed narrator or The Narrator in his daily life at Microsoft. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina was named the ruler of the Dominican Republic in 1930, and continued his tyranny until his assassination in 1961. El Jefe, as he was often referred to, (meaning “the boss”) was originally an army general, and took power as a dictator following the rule and overthrow of Horacio Vasquez. Under Trujillo’s rule, the intense violence in the country became overwhelming. Though he officially stepped down as president almost ten years before his assassination, he continued his command as an unelected military dictator (“History of the Dominican Republic”). Trujillo, in true dictator form, preformed horrible acts of violence. In the 1930’s, he developed a term of racial discrimination against dark-skinned Haitians called “Antihaitianismo,” and in 1937, he was responsible for the slaughter of thousands of Haitian cane-workers. He also abused his position by taking unfair advantage over Dominican citizens. “El Jefe” had the right to any woman of his choice, regardless of their age or marital status.
