Describe the salient opportunities and threats that exist in Motorola’s external environment.
Observing the history of Motorola the enchanting thing that we discover is that the biggest opportunity that they have is their brands are well placed in the market. Also understanding the fact that they have a very strong promotional strategy, by using different tools they tempt their customers towards an exciting era of innovation. The fact that Motorola has been involved in the venture of Telco TV services by Verizon and this has provided the advantage to be placed in the rapidly growing market. One of the analysts has also instructed that Motorola has such products that can allow it to easily enter the mature market where risk is extensively high then in comparison to its competitors. Motorola has also expanded its products worldwide and to different other foreign countries where it has started to penetrate itself into new markets. Thus this will allow them to enter in to a diverse area and thus will also help them to enhance their expertise.
However, it’s not always good news Motorola is operating in a very dynamic market which makes it highly possible for increasing threats to occur. Thus, the biggest threat to Motorola is from Japan which is producing high quality products and flooding them abroad attached with it a cheap price. Also we cannot say that Motorola is the only firm with an advantage of wireless technology because we have other firms like ADB which has provided us a huge success and scope in the area of IP-DTT-STD arena. Thus this company is also getting very much attraction from the Western Europe where it has created it has created a small exclusive market. Also Motorola’s biggest threat is their competitor Sagem communication which was ranked as the highest and prestigious company in France because of its strong position in the market. Also the increasing technology and growing number of competitors like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericson can pose huge threat for Motorola. Countries where government protections laws are against other competitors are not that strict can also gain a huge advantage over Motorola.
Describe the company’s most prominent strength and weaknesses.
For a company to operate successfully it is very necessary for it to realize its strength and weaknesses. Major reason being the fact that once aware of a company’s strength and weaknesses it is very easy to determine ones position in the market and to realise where one is standing. As far as Motorola’s strength and weaknesses are considered let us first focus our view on its strength. One of the greatest strength of Motorola is that it is the leading provider of wireless technology, communication. Also it is the sole supplier to iDen of network infrastructure to Sprint Nextel. Motorola has always been consistent with new technology this can be proved by their innovative ideas and invention in the past. This can be their huge strength as expertise in innovation can take a company to new height. Also there quality has remained consistent which can be a useful factor towards building strong image towards its customers.
However, as we mentioned to survive and compete in a market one should highly be aware of their weaknesses. Thus Motorola’s major weakness has been their quality in recent years which hasn’t been much satisfying to their customers. Also one of the biggest drawbacks was the emergence of defected products within their product lines. Also it hasn’t been much of a successful company towards its employees as the company environment has suggested that the motivation level of workers has been ignored. Also most of the workers working in Motorola are not highly educated and lack training in the specific expertise. Also there mobile phone business has recently suffered a recession leading to loss of customers. Also Motorola’s company has lost extreme amount of sales and customers in return leading to a critical situation for Motorola.
Describe the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of Motorola’s strategic options.
Strategy as we know are long term plans of an organisation in order to have an expected view of your upcoming plans and future. However a strategy can only be successful if it is applied with full competence and it is put to reality bases. Thus as far as Motorola’s strategy is concerned they first focused upon their work place they planned on making it inclusive, also they decided upon working towards their workers motivation and the markets they planned to entered. The advantage associated with such a strategy is that for a successful progress it is very essential for a company to first focus on the cores of its workplace and employees because these can be described as the base for a firm. Another strategy which Motorola planned on developing was to focus on their goals and to align them in a manner so that they are possible to achieve. Thus setting goals can also be very advantageous as it gives an individual a focus towards its achievements. Also their new strategy includes on working upon their relationship with key stake holder. Taking into consideration the needs of stakeholders is also a benefit to the firm as it gives it a good image and also a good publicity. Their strategy also focuses on keeping a focus on year by year metrics. Thus these strategies to an extent have helped Motorola achieve its vision objectives.
As far as the drawbacks are considered just focusing on goals is not going to lead Motorola anywhere. As explained if strategies are not applied realistically then there hardly any chances that successful strategies can be achieved. It is very necessary for Motorola to achieve strategic adaptability. To be aware of the markets changing trends only can then they can achieve their desired goals. Also their strategy towards motivating employees should be undertaken in more of an extensive manner. For example their primary focus should not only be to focus on employee’s motivation but also on their training. Thus a creation of a diverse and skilful force is a very essential factor and this is one of the major factors that Motorola strategy is lacking
Describe how the corporation’s strategy and organisational structure can be designed to solve the company’s strategic issues.
As far as the company organisational structure is considered one need to create a diverse work environment. Thus basically by this we mean that since its technological intensive organisation, it is very necessary to train your employees regularly so that they have awareness and expertise in the particular work they perform. Also one will need to adapt a democratic style of leadership within the organisation. Since it is a creative and innovative environment it is very necessary to encourage worker feedback within the organisation. Quality is another thing which the organisation will need to focus on and maintain the fact that it remains consistent. Quality is the utmost important thing otherwise one can lose its current plus potential customers. One need to make sure that they adapt to technology very quickly as we have observed that there are tonnes of intensive competitors within the environment thus not being diverse can lead to major problems.
