Racing down the hallway with a plastic sword in my hand and a cover hanging off of my back I shouted “All for one, and one for all!”, a motto used by the adventurous antagonist trio in my favorite book of all time, The Three Musketeers. As a child, I've always enjoyed reading classical books such as, Huckberry fin and Swiss family Robison. However, none of these classics seemed to top The Three Musketeers. I fell for the story and the writing in a big way. This book is just full of adventure which was perfect for an imaginative kid like me. The amount of adventure and thrill this book provided really blew my mind. I wasn't much of a reader as a kid, finisihing about half the books I started, but this book caught my eyes. I dare you to take the time to read this outstanding book if you haven't already had the privilege, from the moment that you begin reading the first page you will be propelled into a world of action, quests, love, and brotherhood. In the beginning of the story D'Artagnan is introduced to the three musketeers when he incidentally insulting all of them. They each challenge him to a duel because of this, but while he is dueling with one of the musketeers, the cardinal's guards threatens to arrest them because there is a law in which says there is no dueling. D'Artagnan and the musketeers then join forces and drive the guards away. D’Artagnan then becomes friends with the other two musketeers. I always found this a interesting way to start off the story because it shows that the musketeers were enemies at first but had to work together to save themselves. The primary theme featured in The Three Musketeers is between four young gentlemen devoted to the King. Their friendship allows them to combine forces and defeat evil powers that might otherwise prevail. Friendship is thus portrayed in an immensely positive light in The Three Musketeer ...the friends never argue, and they are always there to share with each other and support each other. Love takes an intensely romantic form in The Three Musketeers as the heroes typically fall in love at first sight with a beautiful woman. Beautiful women in the novel are meant to be worshipped and protected; a man proves his love for a woman with the most extravagant acts he can imagine. This is different to the way other novels resemble were love is a potential source of misery. In The Three Musketeers a woman’s love is a goal that many of the male characters work towards. D’Artagnan’s love for Constance is yet another example of how the novel uses highly romanticized, lofty ideals. D’Artagnan’s love for Constance is a very uncomplicated and one-dimensional. He wants to die for her, perform extreme acts to prove himself. But he hardly feels nervous around her, or feels conflicted or guilty for loving her. Loyalty and friendship in The Three Musketeers is rarely earned and always blindly absolute. It is also a highly respected and coveted quality. Loyalty is a prized currency in the world of The Three Musketeers, where characters must count on the loyalties of others in order to secure their own protection. Loyalty is typically demonstrated by extremely daring and life-risking acts, and the compensation is usually not commensurate. “ In fact, four men such as they were...four men devoted to one another, from their purses to their lives; four men always supporting one another, never yielding, executing singly or together the resolutions formed in common; four arms threatening the four cardinal points, or turning toward a single point...must inevitably, in open day, by mining, in the trench, by cunning, or by force, open themselves a way toward the object they wished to attain, however well it might be defended, or however distant it may seem. The only thing that astonished D’Artagnan was that his friends had never thought of this. (8.9)” It is proved that D’Artagnan feels that together, the four can achieve anything. This is shown in the rest of the novel as they overcome one obstacle after another. Their friendship is enhanced by complete generosity... they share absolutely everything.

Allegiant: My Favorite Book

...“The fire, the fire. It rages within, a campfire and then an inferno, and my body is its fuel. I feel it racing through me, eating away at the weight. There is nothing that can kill me now; I am powerful and invincible and eternal.” –Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior Reading dystopian novels always keeps me on the edge of my seat. The idea of a declining society led by an oppressive government can be devastating, but the way it is depicted in young adult books of today makes the topic quite stimulating and intriguing. For some odd reason, instead of straying from such stories, I become emotionally attached to them. Veronica Roth, through the Divergent series, did that same kind of magic to me. I do not know how it happened. It just HAPPENED. The Divergent series follows the story of Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior as she struggles to make difficult choices about love, family, and sacrifice. The faction-based world she lives in turns out to be a lot different from what she has always known and she is determined to unravel the intricacies of life and fully embrace her Divergence. I may be alone in this, but Allegiant, the third and final book of the trilogy, is my favorite of the pack. It is filled with a lot of thrilling twists, unexpected revelations, and meaningful lessons that got me holding my breath up to the last page. In the first two books, I have seen a lot of Tris’ hasty and self-destructive decisions which caused her so much trouble (Like when she took it upon herself...

Reading Career

...My Career as a Reader Throughout my career as a reader, I have read many books from when I was a kid to the present. I have read many different types of books including children’s books, comic books, drama books, adventure books, autobiographies, fiction and nonfiction. In my career as a reader, my reading experiences as a child, my favorite book as a child and the books I read in grade 9 have influenced my reading career. My reading experiences as a child are one of the three things that have influenced my reading career. When I was very little and had a hard time reading, before I would go to bed my mom or dad would read me a story. The books were about 15 pages long and were an adventure story. My mom and dad read books to be almost every day of the week and sometimes on the weekends. When I was able to read all by myself I got a library card so I could sign out books that I wanted to read by myself. I usually signed out either sports books or adventure books. These books were usually fiction. At school there were times where we could read, so I read a lot at school. My favorite book as a child is the second thing that has impacted my reading career. As a child I would read a lot of different kinds of books, but one of my favorite book series as a child was the books Brady Brady. When I was growing up as a kid I loved to play hockey. I loved the book Brady Brady because it was about hockey and as a kid that’s all I thought about. I also liked many other sports books...

What Is Your Favorite Time of Year? Why?

...What is your favorite time of year? Why? My favorite time of the year is naturally the time when I have the most fun. To me, that time of the year falls during the December holidays, or rather, it starts during the last term of school. It may sound strange of me to include the period of examinations. But I like the way teachers leave us, students, by ourselves to do our own revision. There is hardly any homework to be done but there is a lot of studying to take up our time. Finally, when the examinations are over, we can all heave a joyful sigh of relief and look forward to the seemingly eternal holidays stretching out before us. Just before school breaks up for the holidays, there are a host of post-examination activities, among which is mass dancing in the school hall. This is something I enjoy very much as I get to dance to the newest pop music with all my friends. The opportunity to “break-free” from serious activities of school and to sing and dance there is a truly welcome event. The last day of school comes and goes and the holidays start. The first thing I do is to go to the library and borrow as many books as possible to fill my holidays. I simply love reading book after book without having to worry about putting aside time for schoolwork. I make it a habit to read books of a particular author each holiday. Within the second week of the holidays my birthday arrives, I enjoy helping my mother prepare my favorite food for my birthday. I do not have big birthday...

Why Do I Read

...I have to admit that I am not as prolific of a reader as I used to be. My current reading mainly consists of reading news and science articles from the internet, and occasional bed time stories with my son. I enjoy reading news rather than watch or listen to news, mainly because it allows me to gather and analyze information from various sources without the filter or the bias of television or radio networks news anchors. In addition to news and various articles I prefer to read short stories. My fascination with short stories began at around age 12 or 13. At the time, since access to television in Iran was very limited. We had to entertain ourselves and being a mischievous child I spent a lot of time in my room (being punished) either listening to radio or reading. My favorite books at the time were horror books. I remember buying these paperback books and reading them cover to cover in two or three days and be scared out of my wits for a few days. I recall at the end of some of these books were teasers about the next story that was due to arrive next. However, at the end of one of the books there was a short story by Edgar Allan Poe titled “The Cask of Amontillado”, I read that story several times and every time I found something new that I Had missed previously. That was the reason I got interested in short stories. My fascination with short stories always have been with a given writers ability to develop main characters, , story plot, and a that in novels might take chapters...

...Clifford the Big Red Dog written and illustrated by Norman Bridwell is my favorite childhood book. This was my favorite childhood book because when I was four years old I got a new puppy and she was very small, but it did not take long before what I thought what was huge. She was the biggest dog on my road like Clifford was the biggest dog on Birdwell Island. My dog’s name was Lucky and she could do tricks, fetch, and scare off the bad guys, just like Clifford. She would chew shoes, chase animals, and dig up flowers. I would keep Lucky over any dog, just like Emily Elizabeth would keep Clifford. The Handmaid's Tale

...When I look back to my journey throughout AP Lit, it’s hard to believe it has been a whole year already. At the same time, I can’t believe it has only been a year. This class has made my days brighter and has been a great way to start the morning second semester. My favorite choice book to analyze was The Handmaid’s Tale. I think it might have to do with the fact that we did the journal project with it, so I had to go more into depth than normal when writing about it. I actually ended up recommending it to my sister to use for her final project in English. The not so distant future described in this book absolutely fascinated me. I’ve always been a fan of dystopian/utopian societies, so when I heard about the concept of this book I...

Randy Pausch The Last Lecture Essay

...In The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, my favorite story was the story within Chapter 5 (The Elevator in the Ranch House). In this story, when Pausch was an adolescent, he asked his parents if he could paint his bedroom walls, and they agreed to let him do so. Even though his mother was reluctant into agreeing, she decided to because Pausch’s father loved the creative idea. Pausch decided to decorate his walls with items that matter to him. For two days, with the help of Pausch’s sister (Tammy) and his friend (Jack Sheriff, they painted most of the room. For example, he painted it with the quadratic formula and a large, silver elevator door. They painted a panel with floor numbers one through six, and the number “three” was illuminated. In addition, they drew a simple rocket ship, chess pieces, a submarine, and Pandora’s box (Greek mythology). Since it was the late 1970s, Pausch also wrote the words “Disco sucks,” but his mother painted over the word “sucks” because she thought it was vulgar language. Friends and family who came by the room were often impressed by the creative paintings. As the years passed, his mother never painted over the room, and it was always a treat when Pausch would come to visit his childhood. He was able to sleep in the same bunk bed his father...

Fiction Strengths

...have a great deal to learn. In my opinion writing fiction is one of my strengths, for example, I quite enjoy writing short stories in my free time just for fun. I often share them with one of some of my friends. Although they are not the best stories, writing them is one of the few tasks that I can do for hours without getting bored. I also enjoy writing argumentative essays, finding evidence that supports my claim is interesting to me as well as finding a counter claim. My favorite part is finding the evidence I need to prove the opposing side wrong. Just as I possess writing strengths I also feel like I have some weaknesses. I believe my weakness is writing essays on topics with no background knowledge or information. I like to know what I'm writing about. When I write essays I like making a bubble map or just simply writing down ideas on a piece of paper. This helps me so when I'm typing I actually have an idea of what I'm going to write down. Most of the time I dislike reading books due...
