Section B

Warby Parker Case Analysis

...According to Marc Benioff a sales force CEO, “The secret to successful hiring is this: look for the people who want to change the world.” This quote is closely aligned with the philosophy of the co-founders of Warby Parker. Subsequently, when Neil Blumenthal, David Gilboa, Andrew Hunt and Jeffery Raider went through their hiring process one of the components that had to be met was a devotion to the company’s social mission. For instance, one of their core values was “Take our work and our impact seriously, but not ourselves.” Warby Parker is an innovative player in the fashion space. The company offers high quality, classically crafted eyewear at remarkably low prices, avoiding traditional overhead costs with direct interaction between customers and the elimination of high industry markups. The company was founded in 2010 by four friends, Neil Blumenthal, David Gilboa, Andrew Hunt and Jeffery Raider. The four attended college together at Wharton business school. The concept of their business Warby Parker was developed because David Giloba and Raider had found themselves appalled with high retail cost of designer eyewear. In addition, Neil Blumenthal’s was the former director of a non-profit that delivered eye glasses in developing countries. Consequently, he witnessed first- hand the gap between the eyewear industries manufacturing cost and retail prices. They quickly realized a feasible way to solve this tangible consumer pain point. Their solution was to provide eyewear...

PubMed Health U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health National Center for Biotechnology Information U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. See also: Pediatric asthma Causes, incidence, and risk factors Asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways become tight and the lining of the air passages swells. This reduces the amount of air that can pass by. In sensitive people, asthma symptoms can be triggered by breathing in allergy-causing substances (called allergens or triggers). Common asthma triggers include: * Animals (pet hair or dander) * Dust * Changes in weather (most often cold weather) * Chemicals in the air or in food * Exercise * Mold * Pollen * Respiratory infections, such as the common cold * Strong emotions (stress) * Tobacco smoke Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provoke asthma in some patients. Many people with asthma have a personal or family history of allergies, such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or eczema. Others have no history of allergies. ...motivate staff. This is shown in the Barbour Brown Engineering Ltd case study as everyone is fairly well paid however James is often treated as David’s senior whereby he would have James give out the new projects to staff and was also allowed to authorise site visits when David was out of the office. This has lead too many of the engineers being de-motivated and to a certain point disgruntled as they all have their chartered status and James doesn’t and therefore less qualified. In other words the Intrinsic factors are non-existent; the engineers come to work, told from someone that is less qualified what to do and get paid. The extrinsic factors are met as the engineers are paid good salaries. So if some of the other engineers were given the same responsibilities as James on occasion perhaps they would be far more motivated at work. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory (1954) said that there are several aspects that motivated people to work and once all aspects are satisfied then one can reach a stated of “Self Actualisation” To extend this the money and working conditions help motivation but they need to be stacked with satisfied Physiological, Safety (Security), Social and Esteem needs. This is also shown in Neil Brown section where he would give Jack the autonomy and flexibility to decide how projects should be carried out also once a project was up and running Jack would attend management meetings with clients to discuss the project planning and development. Following this Jack...

Neil Young's Accomplishments

...Welcome to the life of Neil Young. Neil has done a lot in his life, some of the things were bad and some were good. Even after Neil started his career as a musician, he still decided to do good things for other people. Neil Young has been in several bands, but none satisfied him, so he decided to go onto a solo career instead. He had some accomplishments in his life; also he did a lot of good deeds for charities and everyday people. Before Neil Young got into a big band he was in some little bands, like The Squires and CSN&Y. Neil Young got into the band, The Squires, when he moved to Winnipeg, Saskatchewan (Lowe, 2004). The Squires had only one minor hit called “The Sultan” (Schnider and Schwartz, 2014). Other than The Squires Young was in a band called CSN&Y. The way this band was made was when Neil Young, David Cosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash made a quartet. After Young joined them he started out as only a support member, then he became part of the band officially (Lowe, 2004). CSNY&Y had some popular songs, like “Ohio,” “Woodstock,” “Find the Cost of Freedom,” and “Almost Cut My Hair.” CSN&Y had a very bitter and not long time together, their time together only lasted 2 years (biographical dictionary of popular musicians). ...and civil disobedience. Two of the central figures of this movement were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Both men were known for their defiance and free speaking. Their stories, “Self-Reliance” and “Resistance to Civil Government” throughly depicted the transcendental themes of self-reliance and civil disobedience. Along with the two works, the movie Dead Poets Society also has related themes. It is through the main character, Neil Perry’s, nonconformity to his father’s wishes and the teaching of free-thought by his teacher, Mr. Keating, that Dead Poets Society falls in line with the themes of transcendentalism. It is through the...

The Pardoner In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales

...According to David, the Wandering Jew could also be an analogy for the Pardoner's emotions, he states, "The compulsive wish for the tavern life sought by the three young men is complemented by the old man's death wish. Through the old man Chaucer reveals the Pardoner's real secret, the joylessness of the life he professes to relish so much." This hypothesis of David's highlights the fact that possibly the Pardoner's happiness with his own actions may just be a facade. This is a logical conclusion as the Pardoner already contradicted his own actions in his story by denouncing them. The Pardoner's tale provokes an understanding of a strong moral lesson, that it is foolhardy to chase death and live to tell a happy tale. It also tells of how camaraderie falls...

Transcendatlism

...transcendental because of its Thoreauian setting, the teachings of Mr. Keating, and the actions and reactions of the four main characters. Henry David Thoreau's classic story "Walden" is a prime example of a connection between the movie Dead Poets Society and classic literature. Thoreau states in the story that he "went to the woods to live deliberately." In the film, They take multiple different journeys to the woods for different reasons. Even the club they take part in, the dead poets Society, takes place in a cave in the woods. It is a place where they can think freely and not worry about the judgments of their teachers at school. Though this is not the only example of transcendentalism in the movie. John Keating as a character is a key factor in the transcendentalism in this film. Famous historical writers, such as John Locke and Ralph Waldo Emerson, preach the ideas of nonconformity and freethinking. Mr. Keating transfers these thoughts into a modern perspective, teaching the boys to think for themselves. A key example of this is when he showed the boys not to march as a unit, but to walk independently. Mr. Keating's teachings bring out the transcendentalism in the main characters themselves. Neil, Todd, Knox, and Charlie all show their own examples of transcendentalism throughout the film. Neil rebels against his father's wishes by taking part in the play that...
