...I have chosen four films from two of the three different genre. My films were A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) and I Am Legend (2007) from the horror genre then The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Meet The Parents (2000) from the comedy genre. I have found a lot of information on how to watch a movie just by looking at certain elements to tell you if the movie is going to be great or have a plat that will make you want to see more of it. In The 40-Year-Old Virgin the lighting was a high-key lighting and hard lighting it was to make the movie seem cheerful and funny. Also I felt like the movie Meet The Parents used the same lighting. With the camerawork in has noticed that in both of these films in the comedy genre they have used all three of the lens; wide-angle, normal, and telephoto. But used the normal lens a little more throughout the movies. The camera was placed in short distance range and used the angles eye-level angle and high angle. The sound effect in these films are normal and natural sounds no outstanding music or sound effects added. As the filmmakers the artistic ending was great, it was a happy ending like expected. But the film meet the parents it has gave an image that is should have more to it, something else can happen and will still fit with the movie itself. ...The Exorcist and The Omen. Another inspiration to the movies of this generation would be the famous author Stephen King. He contributed to the horror genre with his enticing scary tales, which a handful got movie adaptations of. Some of the earlier films would include The Shining and Carrie, with both depicting supernatural phenomenons (Kantilaftis). Horror would soon verge into a fan favorite sub genre called the slasher film. They were most popular throughout the 1980s and produced many great films with lots of sequels (Burton). Great examples of this would include: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The main plot through each of these movies revolves around a killer chasing and killing each of their victims one by one in many creative ways (Kantilaftis). ...The Production of Halloween The “New Hollywood” era was an era that stretched roughly from the late 60s to the early 80s where there was a wave of young filmmakers who brought a new style into the “New Hollywood” era. A new and improved way of presenting a story was brought, referred to as “post-classical cinema”. These new films were funded and financed by major film studios and introduced a style that wasn’t seen as “traditional” (Hitchman). The “New Hollywood” era films were known to redesign the classic genres of Hollywood like the crime and war films, thus showing a more critical view of society in the past and present. The change in market during the period went from a middle-aged high school educated audience in the mid 60s, to a younger, more affluent, college-educated demographic and by the mid 70s, a majority of all moviegoers were at least under 30. There was desperation in studios during this period due to status of the economy. The best thing that happened to the filmmakers was that they brought an emphasis on realism (Citation 1). Use some of the other techniques that make for solid horror films: dark, light, noises, shadows, weather, and tease attacks, etc. The other concern is the antagonist, Jason. He’s clearly deranged, but after awhile he becomes a bit too cartoonish vs. chilling. For example, the idea of him constantly questioning the name of a person and/or why they are using a different name etc. (Jason vs. Jack) becomes too repetitive. Thus, Jason isn’t considered a scary new monster in the realm of horror stories like in HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13th, or NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. This is what producers are looking for: the next big franchise “monster”. Jason/Davie isn’t that new monster. There are also areas of the script that would benefit from more clarification. For example, according to the storyline there are several victims, but he’s been working for the police for ten years. One has to wonder why no missing person reports were made up until now.
