Organizations have different cultures. Cultures in organizations can be classified under constructive or defensive cultures. The Organizational Culture Inventory (OCI) is a standard for measuring the culture of an organization. It was developed by Robert A. Cooke, PhD and Clayton J. Lafferty, PhD (http://www.humansyn.co.uk, 2007). This inventory provides an organization’s culture in behavioral terms that members believe are required or expected. It helps to determine how effectively an organization can solve problems, perform effectively, and adapt to change. The inventory is well organized, and provides an opportunity for members to provide brief explanations to the choices they make. Completing the inventory takes about 20 minutes. Taking this assessment was an interesting experience. I was able to think critically about my individual roles and expectations in the organization. Additionally, I was able to discover the organizational expectations and my attachment to the operations of the organization. Most questions were tailored towards my feelings and thoughts about certain aspects in the organization such as reputation of my organization and expectations of the organization. Taking this assessment meant a reflection on the organization to me; I critically thought of whether or not I expected to be in the same organization two years on, and whether I was comfortable working in my capacity at the organization. The OCI is an effective tool in providing the organizational culture. It is applicable in any organization. Multinational companies such as Coca Cola have utilized this tool.
