Market research methods
These methods include secondary research, surveys/questionnaires, focus groups and observations.
Surveys
This is new research that has been carried out to answer specific questions or general issues. This would involve surveys and Questionnaires with groups of individuals. JD can carry out surveys on existing products as well as new ones. A situation may arise where JD need to find out what their customers think of the products and services the company provide. The survey may include questions on customer satisfaction and the quality of products. They could be sent through post, Email or just given to customers. Once the surveys are completed by members of the public the results could or could not affect the way JD make decisions. If the information carried out is very negative then the company would need to try a different approach towards making or improving products or services. If the information is very positive then this means JD are doing what is needed to satisfy their customers and are on track to making good profits, products and services. This helps the organisation make a decision on whether to carry on making products to the same standards or to improve them, based on their results.
When JD are looking to produce a new product for a new market a survey will help them accomplish this. As the new product will be set for a new market, new research will be needed. The survey will include questions which may have already been asked in previous product research, however, this time a new market will need to be researched into. The survey will allow the company to get information on what the customers will want. Once the results are collected and evaluated the company will then make a decision on whether to go forth with making the product/service. By the end of all the market research JD will have achieved what they have set out

...underlying preferences directly!! Application: Miller Beer Miller beer is interested in setting the price for their products to maximize revenues. For simplicity, let’s assume that they only have three products: six packs, twelve packs, and cases. At first pass, we could say that all Miller needs to do is estimate a demand curve: That is, Q = D ( P, I , Z ) Quantity of Beer Function of Price, Income, and other Demographic Variables Problem: What are your units??? Suppose that we treat six packs, twelve packs and cases as three different products. We could estimate three demand curves: Q6 = D(P6 , I , Z ) Q12 = D(P12 , I , Z ) Q24 = D(P24 , I , Z ) That is, the demand for each good as a function of each good’s price, income and demographics. Problem: Shouldn’t the price of a six pack affect demand for a twelve pack??? We would need to add all the cross-prices (prices of other goods) to the estimated demand curves. Q6 = D(P6 , P12 , P24 , I , Z ) Q12 = D(P6 , P12 , P24 , I , Z ) Q24 = D(P6 , P12 , P24 , I , Z ) Problem:...

...P6-6B Revised Solution Note: This problem has a couple of remaining issues…First, on November 3, Yoshi only paid freight for 70 of the 80 units that were delivered on November 2. A possible explanation is that Yoshi called the supplier on November 2 and said that ten of the units received were damaged and the supplier agreed to pay the freight for the ten units and pick them up on the 9th. Second, we don't know if Yoshi took the discount on the units purchased on the 21st, but evidently not. Chapter 6

...CHAPTER 6 INTERCOMPANY INVENTORY TRANSACTIONS ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS Q6-1   All inventory transfers between related companies must be eliminated to avoid an overstatement of revenue and cost of goods sold in the consolidated income statement. In addition, when unrealized profits exist at the end of the period, the eliminations are needed to avoid overstating inventory and consolidated net income. Q6-2   An inventory transfer at cost results in an overstatement of sales and cost of goods sold. While net income is not affected, gross profit ratios and other financial statement analysis may be substantially in error if appropriate eliminations are not made. Q6-3   An upstream sale occurs when the parent purchases items from one or more subsidiaries. A downstream sale occurs when the sale is made by the parent to one or more subsidiaries. Knowledge of the direction of sale is important when there are unrealized profits so that the person preparing the consolidation worksheet will know whether to reduce consolidated net income assigned to the controlling interest by the full amount of the unrealized profit (downstream) or reduce consolidated income assigned to the controlling and noncontrolling interests on a proportionate basis (upstream). Q6-4   As in all cases, the total amount of the unrealized profit must be eliminated in preparing the consolidated statements. When the profits are on the parent company's books, consolidated net income and income assigned to the...
