Find at least two peer-reviewed sources in the University Library and discuss in your proposal how those sources support or refute your opinions. The following are useful resources that are available on the Multimedia page of the University Library: * Issues & Controversies * Issues & Controversies in American History * Global Issues in Context

What is the first topic that comes to mind when you think of world-wide controversial issues? For me, the biggest and most wide-spread issue is that of abortion. What is right and what is wrong? Are there exceptions to when abortion is okay? Do sexual offenses against a victim make abortion a “fair” decision? What about genetic testing that shows serious medical problems for a fetus?
“Abortion is the most often topic written about in School. Abortion is the most often topic debated in School. Abortion is the final outcome of one out of every three pregnancies in the U.S. Abortion divides our country, our religions, our family, our society and our politics.” – This quote comes from the home page of abortioninfo.org and sums up most of the reason why I have chosen this topic to write about. This topic can keep a feminist talking and is the baseline for many political campaigns which are dependent on whether or not the elected official is pro-abortion or not.
Feminism ties best into the subject of abortions because women have rights to their own bodies and the freedom to reproduce and keep the child or to abort the fetus.” Feminist movements have campaigned and continue to campaign for women's rights, including the right to vote, to hold public office, to work, to fair wages or equal pay, to own property, to education, to enter contracts, to have equal rights within marriage, and to have maternity leave. Feminists have also worked to promote bodily autonomy and integrity, and to protect women and girls from rape, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.” I feel that everything feminist work for is a bigger part of women’s rights to have a child or terminate a pregnancy. Abortion is just a sub-category of feminism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminism
Due to the fact that abortions are only a problem for some and a choice for others it is difficult to come up with a “solution” to the “problem.” Some people think riots outside of abortion clinics will solve the problem and change minds. Others use political campaigns to their advantage. Others sway people’s opinions with social media and audio/visual aids. Every “problem” does not have a solution that will help everyone involved, and using abortions to solve problems is a dangerous solution which could lead to permanent damages to a woman’s body. My only thought about solutions to stop abortions and fights over what is ethical or not is that women who do not want abortions should use contraceptives, with few exceptions for medical reasons or personal trauma ending in pregnancy.

In the document The Abortion Controversy: A Documentary History the author Eva R. Rubin uses information gathered from religious and medical sources in order to back up her research on abortion controversy. She also uses documentation from feminist, law groups and professors, and even the President of Planned Parenthood. Some documents are about violence against abortion clinics and the doctors who perform abortions. All the documents sited in the authors work supports the sources I would use and my reasons for choosing this specific controversial topic.

In this document you do not have to read very far before coming across words such as permiscoius and reading about how abortions are against God’s design for humanity, etc. While I hadn’t thought to mention the religious aspects of why people would be against abortions, I did think about the women who would be seen as being promiscuous, even in rape scenarios. This document is in support of my theories on why people are against abortions.
