Power of Smiling

Smiling is a facial expression that is understood by everyone, regardless of culture, race, or religion; it is internationally known. In the lecture held at the University of TED in 2011, Ron Gutman, founder of the HealthTap Company, states that a simple smile has the power to make things better. Accordingly, he refers to a smile as a superpower. He explains that the act of smiling itself makes you feel better rather than smiling being a result of feeling good. So the purpose of this lecture may have been to encourage one’s ability to smile and be happy even in the hardest of times. Gutman reviews a raft of studies about smiling which reveals some surprising results and discusses how smiling is contagious and beneficial.
He starts off his lecture by revealing some logical facts about the hidden power of a smile. For instance, a study which measured smiles of students in a high school yearbook photos to look what the students’ lives were after decades, found that widest smilers were more likely to be in a long-lasting marriage and to have a better sense of personal well-being. Another study found that the span of major league baseball players’ smiles in their photos predicted longevity. Gutman surprises the gathering by revealing that we are actually born smiling as technology shows that babies appear to smile even in the womb. Therefore, it is one of the most basic biological expressions of all humans and we are part of naturally smiling species.
Smiling is evolutionary contagious and we have a hidden innate drive to smile when we see one. This occurs even among strangers when we have no intention to connect with the other person. Gutman interacts with the audience by asking if they smile more than 20 times a day. Then he mentions that one-third of people smile less than 5 times a day, which shocks the audience. At that point he states that in fact those with the most amazing super powers are children, who smile as four hundred times per day. He supports his claim by revealing a study which showed that it’s very difficult to frown when looking at someone who smiles. Furthermore, he tells that smiling stimulates our brain’s reward mechanisms in a way that even chocolate, a well-regarded pleasure-inducer, cannot match. Also, he says that smiling can be as stimulating as receiving up to 16,000 Pounds Sterling in cash and 2000 bars of chocolate, I find this very humorous. He keeps the enthusiasm in the audience by saying that at 400 daily smiles, some children feel like Mark Zuckerberg every day. And unlike lots of chocolate, lots of smiling can actually make you healthier and appealing since smiling can help people have a better immune system and a stress free life.

Ron Gutman is the CEO and Founder of the Interactive Health Company HealthTap. He is a recognized thought leader in health and innovation. Gutman frequently speaks at technology and health conferences which make him qualified and experienced about the knowledge of human well-being. Moreover, from the beginning of the speech he appeared to be likable so I felt he was someone worth listening to. Gutman uses various facts and figures to support his claim and thesis. This logical appeal in his lecture not only enhances his credibility but also the excitement in the audience. However, his speech does not solely rely on pathos as he does not arouse much of the emotions in the audience. Gutman walks freely around the platform and uses his expression accurately which makes him appear comfortable and casual throughout the lecture. Also, I find his accent very easy to understand. He often interacts with the audience by asking questions which keeps the eagerness of the gathering. Additionally, he frequently uses visual effects rather than endless speech which would have been lifeless. Nonetheless, he appears clumsy at times which cause the crowd to lose attention on the subject matter.
In my opinion, I mostly agree with Ron Gutman because he reminded people of something they have forgotten and made them realize that such simple act can make everything better. Now I believe that smiling for no reason is not as a result of insanity but because you want to feel better. I personally believe in the power of smiling since it can lighten up a mood, decrease stress, make you appear more confident and most importantly bring happiness to another person’s day. Why do women and teenage girls spend money on makeup and cosmetic procedures to look more attractive? In my opinion the most beautiful face in the world will not be pleasing with down turned lips and a sour expression. I trust that a plain face can be transformed by the power of a smile. One of my goals every day is to smile whether to myself or to someone else, even a complete stranger, regardless of the mood I am in. Yet, I doubt whether smiling at people for no useful reason will send a wrong impression. For instance, if someone smiles at another who belongs to the other gender, they might feel that he or she is interested in them. Nevertheless, smiling is what grounds me; it makes me feel more in control every day. It reminds me that, despite the fast pace of life, I must remember to be happy and appreciate the little things in life. After listening to Ron Gutman I trust that Smiling would help me overcome times of fear and anxiety. Sometimes, when no words can be spoken, a smile is all that is needed to fill the air. I like the speech because it encouraged me to smile even more. . “A smile is a little curve that sets a lot of things straight”, so I learnt that a simple expression which takes only three seconds and no amount of effort has a huge impact on a person’s life .Hence, we should keep spreading it.

Cognitive Bias Summary

...The video’s in module three cover the different types of Biases and the hidden power of smiling. The articles which I found very interesting cover two things that are very important to me, how to stop swearing and if political correctness is bad for society. In the first video – What is a Cognitive Bias? It seems that a basic description of cognitive bias is the coming to know or knowing an inclination of the human mind. Included in this was our shortcut mechanism from making decisions, which is known as Heuristics. The Self Serving Bias is the tittle of video two; which describes a tendency of people to attribute success to themselves, and failures to outside factors. Which means they don’t learn from their mistakes and do things for years without bettering themselves. Video three Assertiveness; covers assertiveness and...

Who Is Lady Lazarus's Death?

...“knees”, “skin”, and “bone” as they strip her away of not only her clothing, but her body as well. The crowd is violently and savagely ripping her body apart. This brutal imagery symbolizes her inability to have power over her own body as this happy “peanut-crunching crowd”(26) is brutalizing her by savagely “eating” her alive, as she watches in horror. The line “Nevertheless I am the same, identical woman”(34), represents her maintaining her identity even though this crowd has ripped her apart. In other words, the crowd dehumanized her by ripping off her skin and clothes, an attempt to strip her of her identity. But despite this horrific event that the crowd put her through, she remains the same woman. There may also be a possibility that by her making it clear to us that she is the “same identical woman”(34), she is letting us know that although she has been resurrected from the dead, she is the same woman that she was before death. She is stressing to us that she is the same woman who died and came back to life. She has not been reincarnated nor is the “dead” version of her just a twin. She is the walking miracle who died then came back to life for the third time. It seems that Lady Lazarus is fighting for power and control in this poem. Although she seems to have power in this poem through her use of words, imagery, and language,...

Foreshadowing In Animal Farm And Julius Caesar

...Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. ("Definition of Foreshadowing." Literary Devices. N.p., 2016. Web. 11 Dec. 2016. ) The novella Animal Farm written by George Orwell and the tragic play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare display various examples of foreshadowing that illustrates future events that happen later in these stories. In Animal Farm, George Orwell foreshadows the pigs’ gradual abuse of their power. “Never mind the milk, comrades!” cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. “That will be attended to. The harvest is more important. Comrade Snowball will lead the way. I shall follow in a few minutes. Forward, comrades! The hay is waiting. So the animals trooped down to the hayfield to begin the harvest, and when they came back in the evening it was noticed that the milk had disappeared” (Orwell, 26). The animal’s had wondered what to do with the extra milk and tried to discuss it, but Napoleon, the pig, told them that it wasn't important compared to the harvest. Napoleon told the animals to follow Snowball and he would be with them, but once the animals had returned for the evening the milk was gone, implying Napoleon took it or did something with it. The soon betrayal of the hard working horse, Boxer is foreshadowed after the attacks Napoleon made. “To the amazement of everybody, three of them flung themselves upon Boxer. Boxer saw them coming and put out his great hoof...

Stereotypes in Mass Media

...Name Instructor Course Date Stereotypes in Mass Media Mass media has become a main source of popular culture in modern society. The media does not only entertain or feed information to the audience, but also transfers the beliefs, values and stereotypes of the society resulting to a change in the order of life in society (Wells 514). According to Althusser, families, schools and religions play a crucial role of ideological state apparatuses. Such institutions indoctrinate and transfer the ideologies of society into the minds of people in the society in order to control them. However, in modern society, the media is turning out to be yet another apparatus for controlling the minds of people. To most people, the pieces of art such as movies, magazines, documentaries and music in the media seem unique. However, all these products are no different from each other. The content in the media reflects the life of people in such a way that people would comprehend. Such a reflection occurs through reproduction of stereotypes which impacts profoundly on life in society (Wells 514). This paper examines the stereotypes mass media in more detail by considering the works of Betye Saar, the use of the concept in advertising and images in popular culture such as Aunt Jemima among others. The Liberation of Aunt Jemima Betye Saar is one of the few women who challenged the male artists’ dominance in the museum and gallery spaces in the 1970s. Some organizations such...

Visual Analysis

...Formal Visual Analysis of Yamantaka Vajrabhairava Yamantaka Vajrabhairava is a sculpture of a buffalo-headed figure with multiple heads, hands and legs. Although the creature communicates an energy which may at first seem menacing because of its face and the objects either held in its hands or stomped underfoot, when one includes the image of the peaceful man surmounting him, one will realize that it is using this energy protectively rather than aggressively. Before I prove my argument, I am going to provide a more detailed description of the sculpture. This whole object is standing straight, communicating a sense of majesty at first glance. It is raised on a table with a pedestal, but it is as wide as the arm length of a 10-year-old child and should reach an adult’s chin if resting on the ground. Because it is huge in size, viewers need to go to both of its sides in order to be able to perceive every part of it clearly, but its front is more busier than the back, meaning that it is usually seen from the front. Although covered with a layer of paint in dark blue, red and gold, this sculpture is made of wood because its wood grain is fairly visible. Besides the buffalo face, this figure has six other faces in blue, red, yellow, white, grey and black. At the very top of Yamantaka’s head is the head of a peaceful, amiable man adorned with a crown and beautiful jewelry; the body of this man is not included in this sculpture. Its 34 hands are stretching out and holding a number of...

Analysis of Carlsberg Ads

...Analysis of Carlsberg Advertisements Cultural differences and similarities between Denmark and Great Britain Consumer Behaviour RSM353 Chernenko Kirill The following examination of British and Danish versions of printed advertisements of Carlsberg beer is to determine role of culture in advertising and compare and contrast how the same brand is advertised in different cultures. I. Danish printed advertisement The poster shows 4 men in the forest having conversation and smiling, meanwhile everyone has a bottle in a hand. The background shows the connection to wild nature: large green trees together with five fallow dears, a magpie, a fox and a pheasant. The men have been hunting, possibly, and decided to take a break. The idea is to illustrate a moment of relaxation and enjoyment of Carlsberg beer in a good company. The slogan “Vores ol brygget pa det bedste vi har” (Our beer. Brewed from the best we have) at the bottom, involves different product characteristics. The first part “Vores ol” awakes the awareness of Danes, because their traditional beer connects people in Denmark. Per contra, the final part focuses on quality of a beverage, which worth to go hunting. The image and the content of a text box creates a unified whole. The advertisement illustrates the traditional myth of drinking beer since hunting is an old tradition and according to the text box "Only 11% of the Danish hunters are hunting to hunt" which implies social interaction with friends. And, therefore...
