Proposal to Create a Research Report on Corporate e-Learning

INTRODUCTION
For good reason, the growth and development of our employees through improved learning opportunities is one of the main values found in PG&E’s mission statement. As a company, we are painstakingly aware that the future success of PG&E depends on our ability to provide our employees with the training and development that is necessary to drive better business outcomes in safety, customer satisfaction, financial performance, and environmental leadership. As corporate resources—time and money—continue to decline, providing the required training has become an increasingly difficult task. Faced with similar time and budget constraints, an increasing number of companies are turning to corporate e-learning as a viable solution. Corporate e-learning offers the promise of a more dynamic and interactive learning experience compared to traditional methods of corporate training at a lower and more cost-effective price (Brack 2).

Over the past decade, there has been extensive research conducted in the field of corporate e-learning. This information is abundant, cheap, and readily accessible to those who wish to obtain it. For companies such as PG&E who are considering the adoption of corporate e-learning, whether purchased from an external source or designed and developed in-house, conducting a research literature review is the first step. Research literature discussing how e-learning programs meet or fail the needs of corporate e-learners, environmental requirement for successful e-learning, and how to appropriately identify the costs associated with e-learning will help PG&E make informed decisions that will maximize our limited resources.

The proposal that follows is organized using the following section headings: proposal statement and research qualifications, research plan, and conclusion. Report scope, sources, methods, and timeline subcategories are located in the research plan section.

PROPOSAL STATEMENT AND RESEARCH QUALIFICIATIONS
I propose to complete a research project on corporate e-learning with the intent to use the research as a preliminary design and implementation guide for the e-Learning Initiative. All work to be completed will be performed by me. As Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Training and Development Manager, I have extensive research expertise in the field of corporate training and development.

RESEARCH PLAN
Scope: The research report will summarize five scholarly articles on corporate e-learning found via the Academic Search Premier database using the keywords corporate e-learning, case study, online, training, and development. In addition, the report will summarize one case study on the topic.

Sources: The attached Works Cited page lists key articles and case study to be analyzed in the research report.

Methods: The research report will address the following research questions: o What trends in research methods or results can be identified in the literature? o Are there identifiable controversies within the literature? o Are there identifiable weaknesses in the methods or conclusions in the literature? o What areas/topics for future research are recommended in the literature?

Project Timeline: o Peer review draft complete: 11/27 o Final draft complete: 12/4

CONCLUSION
Future success of PG&E requires more efficient and effect training and development programs. Without improvements, it will be all but impossible to provide our employees with the required training and development necessary to drive better business outcomes in safety, customer satisfaction, financial performance, and environmental leadership. Corporate e-learning has been increasingly adopted by companies experiencing similar time and budget constraints. Conducting a research project on corporate e-learning is the necessary first step in determining if it is a viable option for us.
