It has been an easy to use and replicate without worry of patent or licensing infringement. However, in 2006 Microsoft found that many of their patents had been infringed upon by several different aspects. The Linux kernel found in most servers was one of them. Microsoft took a big leap going after FOSS for 235 patents. FOSS is run by Stallman who was responsible for the GNU Manifesto also known to most as the GNU General Public License (GPL) . With Microsoft heading the full speed train against FOSS it took a demanding tire on both parties. While Microsoft, in the mean time was also striking a deal with Novell on its Linux based server support. FOSS was sure to go under as Linux was the base of all its open source used in many applications and the applications within Linux such as samaba or Open Office. The Deal with Novell was made to walk around the GPL of the GNU and expose loop holes for Microsoft’s gain but also creating a pressing dilemma for the GNU. The deal struck between Novell and Microsoft was a “we don’t sue you and you don’t sue us” which indicates that not only was FOSS involved in patent infringement but also Microsoft. Summed up, she states: “…womanists are simultaneously concerned with rectifying the relationships between humans and other humans, humans and nature, and humans and the spirit world.” (pg. 35) In the required reading this week, Maparyan explores the activist work of three women, including her own heart wrenching story, and how it ties into the definition as mentioned above. In chapter 10, Speaking Truth Inside Power, Maparyan talks about Preg Govender’s work and how she was a trail blazer, promoting “the importance of inner and outer change” (pg. 253) for the relationships between humans and the love, compassion, and interconnectedness required to break down barriers of race, class, and gender in politics. Govender was an advocate for meditation and believed that it “deserves a more prominent and unapologetic place in our social change repertoire.” (pg. 251) I can agree that through meditation, real change can occur. As the title suggests, this research study focuses on the effects of soda drinking. I chose the article because of its highly detailed and informative title. This seems to be a great indication of the potential quality of the research. The title itself indicates what is being investigated, who the basic sample is, and the location of the research. As I reviewed the research, it became clear that the independent variable was the drinking of soda. Some of the sample drinks soda and some of the same does not drink soda. There are many different dependent variables that are recorded in the process of drawing a conclusion. This includes many different blood chemistry tests, including cholesterol and blood glucose level. The researchers also noted the body mass index of soda drinkers versus those who denied drinking soda. The sample included 275 randomly chosen girls from different schools. There is not a great deal of information about the demographics of the selected sample. However, it is noted that this information was gathered.
