Rise of Nanotechnology

When thinking of Nanotechnology one could think of the movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. In the movie Cobra steals nanotech warheads and attacks the Eiffel Tower and it is destroyed by molecule sized machines in a matter of minutes. At this point in time nanotechnology is nowhere near this far along. Nanotechnology of today is about manipulating different types of matter on a molecular scale, as a result making them stronger and more durable. With technology expanding, nanotechnology can revolutionize the medical industry as well like never before.
Nanotechnology- based drug delivery is being seen as a revolution in protein and gene therapy, for delivering biomolecules such as DNA and siRNA, enabling researchers to overcome several hurdles that are found in these therapies using conventional delivery systems (India Pharma News). The drugs would inter through a nanoparticle that is capable of targeting specific diseased cells, which contains both therapeutic agents that are released into the cell and a sensor that regulates the release. Many stages of this approach have already been proven, but the combined targeting and controlled release have yet to be accomplished. Nanotechnologists think they have an answer for the treatment of cancer with the targeted drug delivery therapies. If scientists can load their cancer-detecting nanoparticles with anticancer drugs, they could attack the cancer exactly where it lives. A treatment like this means less usage of medication and lower levels of side effects. Nanoparticles can also carry targeted and time release drugs. An effective dose of drugs could be delivered to a specific area but scheduled to release over a planned period to ensure maximum effectiveness and the patient's safety.

The way carbon nanotubes are produced is through multiple growth methods. One of them is Arc Discharge, which is done by running a 100 amp current through the carbon soot of graphite electrodes. It produces 30% of the weight into both single and multi-walled nanotubes with lengths of up to 50 micrometers with structural defects. Another method is Chemical Vapor Deposition, which uses a substrate that contains metal particles, commonly nickel, cobalt, iron, or a combination. The substrate is heated to approximately 700°C, and then they bleed two gases into the reactor: a process gas like ammonia, nitrogen, or hydrogen, and a carbon-containing gas like acetylene, ethylene, ethanol or methane. Once that, and a couple other, more complex processes are performed, the carbon-containing gas is broken down, and the carbon is transported to the edges of the particle and the substrate, where it forms the nanotubes.
