Answer Stephanie Losee and Helaine Olen, authors of "Office Mate: The ..[->5] so Dating and romance in the workplace is an interesting topic that will cause quite a discussion among many professionals and their coworkers. In the book titled Office Mate: The Employee Handbook for Finding and Managing Romance on the Job, 38% of employees ages twenty- five to twenty-nine have had an office romance (Losee & Olen, 2007, p. 55). Now, many individuals view office romances as an unavoidable trend as a result of people working together that share the same common interests (Losee & Olen, 2007). However, many people wonder what can be done to decrease the problematic situations that can arise when office romances occur in the workplace. A Consensual Relationship Agreement is a written contract that helps to address the issues created by office romances (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011). This agreement acknowledges that such relationships will develop and ask that the parties inform their immediate supervisor of any romantic relationship (Merrill & Knox, 2010, p. 171). The contract will confidentially verify that the relationship is consensual (Merrill & Knox, 2010, p. 171). The goal of this policy is to prevent cases of sexual harassment, perceptions of favoritism, and inappropriate workplace behavior (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011). As an elementary educator in the Memphis City School System, I have observed many aspects of office dating and its negative effects. Many times an office romance can go sour and as a result, relationship disputes spill over into the workplace. Such hostile disputes can easily distract employees and decrease their effectiveness. Therefore, a Consensual Relationship Agreement should be signed by employees in the Memphis City School System to promote an upstanding, ethical culture, to reduce the risk of harm to the organization by lawsuits...
When it comes to attraction, it is not the position of the person that draws them together; it’s the common interest, and physical attraction. I have to agree with Helaine Olen, the coauthor of Office Mate, “This issue is not going away” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011).

Love in the workplace. It is bound to happen! I have seen it happen throughout my career. The truth of the matter is that we spend so much time at work and sometimes going through work challenges with the long hours may lead to extracurricular activity; say a dinner or even drinks. And the next you know, it is now a romantic relationship. Our own President met his wife for the first time in the workplace. So, it is a fact of life that relationships will develop in the workplace and employers must understand how to properly manage them. According to the case study, evidence suggests that employers who try to prohibit co-worker sexual or romantic relationships actually achieve the exact opposite. Therefore, rather than stop it, employers began requiring the parties involved to sign consensual relationship agreements (CRA). These CRAs, otherwise known as love contracts, have one major purpose in mind; protect against sexual harassment lawsuits. In this paper, I will examine CRAs or love contracts within my workplace; particularly pros and cons. I will also examine the ethical principals involved in using CRAs while discussing the idea of at least one alternative to this concept of love contracts.

The most compelling evidence I found which supports using CRAs came from Pierce & Aguinis’ …Managing Workplace Romances… article. The authors argue that the traditional approach toward managing workplace romance has been legal-centric; meaning it was all about protection from lawsuits. Instead, the article adds, human resource (HR) leaders should move toward an “organizationally sensible” approach to managing romance in the workplace.
