The Section 8 program is also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The program is a Federal Government housing or rent assistance program. It provides different forms of housing assistance to low income renters and even homeowners. The main people who receive this assistance are low income individuals or families who are living in poverty, the elderly, and the disabled. This program helps families to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing. This can be single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. The families that qualify for the assistance it pays the monthly rental fee for the homes and apartments that are located anywhere. There are many public housing agencies that certify the tenants and the people who participate in the …show more content…
The U.S. government started building many facilities to house the poor and families who were in need. The U.S. Housing Act was the beginning of the federal housing assistance in the United States, which congress passed in 1937(Barrymore, n.d.). It provided the funds to develop public housing units for low income tenants. Local authorities controlled and maintained the units. In 1961 the Housing Act was modified to create Section 23 the Leasing Housing Program, which low income tenants were placed in private units leased by local housing authorities. This is when the tenants paid a portion of the rent and the housing authorities paid the rest, and this is when the government arranged between the landlord and tenant. Then the Act was amended again in 1974 to what we have now, which is Section 8. Section 8 was to switch the focus to help low income people who were spending too much of their earnings on housing instead of developing and managing public housing. Ever since 1974, legislation has made many changes to the Section 8 several times. For instance at first it involved housing allowance type program, which was the difference in whatever the household could afford. Now the tenants receive a housing voucher that they can use for any house, apartment, or townhouse that has been qualified for the Section 8 …show more content…
To be eligible for the housing voucher it is determined by the PHA based on your total income and family size. During the process they will collect information on family income, assets, and family composition. Then the PHA will verify all these things will determine program eligibility and the amount of housing assistance payment. The amount income that you receive will differ based on the number of people in the family. The PHA’s will also verify each individual’s citizen status by requesting a U.S. passport, social security card, or other documentation. Section 8 vouchers will not be given to anyone who has been evicted from a property within the last three years for drug related activity or has been convicted of producing methamphetamine in an assisted housing project. The PHA may have a difference on how they help the people who may be on the waitlist. For example, PHAs may give a preference to a family who is homeless or living in poor housing, paying more than 50% of its income for rent, or involuntarily displaced (Housing Choice Vouchers Fact Sheet, n.d. para.11). Families who qualify for any such local preferences move ahead of other families on the list. The housing choice voucher program also allows the families to move without the loss of housing assistance.
