Beginning with Phillip II’s campaign Greece became a very successful and large territory. Following Greece, Rome became an even larger empire created by Julius Caesar. There were various changes between Greece and Rome rule regarding governmental structure, land ruled, language used, and social structure. Although a there was much change between the empires, there were many continuities as well such as religious views, social class relations, philosophies, and social activities. Greece’s conquest was cut short because Alexander’s troops refused to go on. Rome did not have this issue. Another difference between the two empires was their governmental structure. Greece was composed of polis’ or city-states. The polis’ made Greece decentralized because the individual city-states lacked unification. From city-state to city-state society differed. Whereas Sparta was more military oriented, Athens was more focused around academia and trade. Rome did not have this differentiation throughout its empire because it was centralized. Caesar began this process, but after his assassination Augustus continued it. What made Augustus’ rule a success was that he incorporated all different people with differing views into political positions, but he ultimately made himself in charge of all major decisions. Rome’s centralizing government can be attributed to seeing how autonomous city-state rule fared. There were various conflicts, the most notable being between Athens and Sparta. To try and prevent disunity, Rome leaders decided to centralize the government. An additional key transformation between Greece and Rome rule was the role of women in society. In general, women did not possess power in Greek city-states. …show more content…
The Greeks were polytheistic people, holding various gods accountable for creating things such as night, day, sun, moon, and other natural phenomena. They believed that Zeus was the overall ruler of the divine realm. The religious views of the Romans mirrored the Greeks. The gods were credited for making the world and controlling the elements of natural phenomena. The Romans simply altered the names of the various gods. One such example was changing the Greek’s main god, Zeus, to Jupiter instead. Some of the other positions that gods held that were the same in both societies were the god of war and the ruler of the sea. Rome’s philosophies were based off of Greek philosophies. One of the most influential Greek philosophical groups was the Stoics. For example, the Romans adopted Stoicism, which became very popular. Stoicism was the desire of individual’s to identify a set of universal moral standards based on nature and reason. The reason why Stoicism was so popular was that it was centered on people aiding others and leading virtuous lives. People truly believed that they could escape the pressures of the world if they adhered to their societal duties. To have the ability to avoid the difficult pressures of the modern world is very appealing, so Stoicism’s support remained high. Another trend that continues into the Rome

Greek and Roman Culture

...similar, yet unique. Both had an influence on the Western world. Rome conquered many areas around the Mediterranean Sea. It grew into a huge empire because of how it dealt with the cities they conquered. Unlike most, when a city is defeated they are extracted from the land but Rome offered the defeated people citizenship. Often when the people became citizens, they actually joined the Roman army. Greece was conquered in 146 B.C. They became united with Rome by force. Their culture and philosophy were more advanced and taught the Greeks many things. The Romans soon discovered that the Greeks had much to offer such as knowledge, art, architecture and traditions. The Romans built upon and adopted some of these traditions. In many ways, these two empires were similar. Each of these relied on an agricultural economy. Greece relied on the cultivation of olives and grapes and traded these with foreigners for abundant supplies of grain and supplies needed to survive. The Romans cultivated wheat and grain and other food. They also indulged in trade mostly with neighbors while the Greeks traveled abroad. In both Roman and Greek cultures, the women were responsible for the home and family but their freedoms were different. They also believed that women should not have the same political rights as men (Christian Standard and A Brief Peek at Ancient Greece and Egypt). In Greece the women had few rights and in Rome they had more freedom to go shopping, visit temples and other privileges...

Roman Mythology vs. Greek Mythology

...study and interpretation of such myths.” A long time ago mythology was something treated with respect. People respected and believed in it. The two major mythologies known are Greek and Roman. What are the similarities and differences between these two famous mythologies? The Roman mythology has two types of creation. Certain people believe it was created around the 12th century BC, after the war between Greece and Asia. The legend says that after the war, Aeneas, a very strong and popular soldier of the Greek royal army, won the battle against Asia but then decided to leave for Carthage. There, the Queen Dido fell in love with him but Aeneas left her to travel to Italy, where he found Rome. From there, Aeneas knowing the gods from his culture decided to create a new mythology with new gods. The other type of creation of the Roman mythology consists of two men from Greece, Romulus and Remus, who were the sons of the God Mars and a mortal woman named Rhea Silvia. These two brothers lived with their uncle. When their parents died the uncle decided to kill the two brothers so he could receive the power of their father, the God Mars. In the conflict, Remus died but Romulus escaped to a new city named Rome, where he became its first king. “The date that Romulus founded Rome was 753 BC” (Varro). There were several more gods in the Roman Mythology. There were 21 considered very important for the people because they represented earth and the living on earth. They were pictured...
