The difference between an Internet search engine such as Google or Yahoo and a search using a library subscription database of professional and juried articles are extreme. I started my research by choosing two different search tools, Google and EBSCO’s Academic premiere search database. In both search bars I searched for “ privacy and security on the internet” and was amazed by the different results between the two. The main difference I noticed between the two was how easy and fast I was able to validate and verify the information from the EBSCO results and not so much from the Google results. On the EBSCO database, the first thing you see when you click on a search result is some brief background information of the article. It lists the Authors, Document type, company or entity that’s running the article and a brief discussion of what the articles about. Additionally, you can click on the text to find out more information about the author or company running the article. When I see information like that it puts a good feeling in my gut that tells me that the information is good to go. When I go through the Google results, not all of them have authors attached to the articles or if they do their names aren't hypertext so I can’t just click on it and get more information that way. I would have to open a new window and do a whole new search. Also, on the Google results, a lot of them were trying to sell me something or had a bunch of Ads popping up and causing distraction. This was not the case with the EBSCO database; it was strictly for informational purposes. Another difference I noticed was that when I evaluated the sites using the techniques provided by UC-Berkeley (Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply & questions to Ask) I found that the

...Both can be very helpful in obtaining information yet one gives me a sense that the information I am looking for is more trustworthy than the other. My first choice is generally doing searches in google.com . It is what I am most familiar with in regards to internet searches. While searching the terms “privacy and security on the Internet” I found many of the sites were businesses trying to sell a product rather than give me information about privacy and security. These companies boast many claims about winning this award or that award. I could spend all day trying to identify what company or organization was issuing these awards and their validity. Also, these website links are to the most current version of their products so the recency is data from 2012 and was usually based on information gathered from the previous year. Since these were generally reputable companies all claiming they are the best, I do understand that the product being sold is most likely quite good. However, the claims they all seem to make about being the best is all relative to where they are basing their information to come up with these conclusions that are sold to the public. A new kind of internet search for me is using an academic database. This type of search seemed to give me more background or history of privacy and security on the Internet. The basic search results yielded articles from academic journals and periodicals. The references were vast and very detailed...
