...World Religions Report Hum 130 Saturday 4, 2012 World Religions Report When I read the Syllabus at the beginning of this course, I wondered, what religion could I chose to do this report on. I had been away from the area for so long I did not know anyone to talk to. Someone knocked on my door and asked me if I could come outside, they would like to talk to me. There stood two men who told me they were missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA Mormons). I felt like a higher power sent them to me. I knew nothing about this Church, but I had heard of Mormons and what I had heard was not good. I was curious and wanted to learn more. The missionaries started talking to me about their faith and read to me from the Mormon Bible, and we had prayer that day. They asked me to do some reading in the Bible and write down any questions I had, and we would discuss them when they came back. When they came back we started with some of the history of their Church. They talked to me about Joseph Smith and asked me to keep an open mind. It’s ironic that people would assume that Mormons are polygamists when in fact, no one assumes that I am a polygamist when I tell them that I’m Hmong. Polygamy plays a role in the Hmong culture; my wife has more grandparents that she can name. In fact, Hmong people still practice polygamy in the United States, though, in secret of course. In contrast to the previous label I mentioned, being labeled a polygamist upsets me because it is used more as an accusatory label; people use it when they want to put my religion down.
