Leavenworth is the most dreaded facility in the prison system because of its fierce population; it is governed by ruthless clans competing for dominance. Pete Earley features the inmates in Leavenworth, who have certainly been placed there because they have been convicted of dark and desperate deeds, have been transfigured by their imprisonment into something far darker. The book is an eyewitness account of day-to day life inside the United States penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas the oldest federal prison and one of the most dangerous in the nation. The books major players consist of Carl Bowles, the sexual predator with a talent for murder; Dallas Scott, a gang member who has spent almost thirty of his forty-two years behind bars; Robert Matthews, the warden, who seems to be an essentially decent man in an indecent place; Thomas Silverstein, a sociopath confined in no human contact status since 1933 and career bank robber William Post who finds meaning in caring for the cats who have found a home live inside Leavenworth's walls. The story that these inmates - and their guards - tell of life in Leavenworth is one filled with rituals of violence no less potentially deadly because of their ritualistic quality and an astonishing degree of egotism and self-approval in men who have done terrible things. Prisoners who show signs of rage deserve to be locked in solitary confinement, I believe prisoners need to see what it is really like to suffer for their crimes instead of getting free healthcare and being able to graduate with their GED, committing a crime does not mean special privileges when in prison.
Leavenworth is two independent structures, one within the other a great stone building dropped like a cake dish over a rectangular, five story tall row of the building like a giant honeycomb: side by side, one row atop the other and back to back, so each cell

My Journey

...Effects of Tourism on Hot Springs Residents COMM/215 July 14, 2014 Tourism in Hot Springs, Arkansas, over the years has slowly risen into a mass of pedestrians taking over the downtown area. There are tourists everywhere (easy to spot) taking pictures, jaywalking, visiting the bath houses, the hot springs and gathering drinking water from the springs, biker rallies, and many of the other touristic attractions available to them. Hot Springs is a beautiful area, and people from all over the state and the country come to visit. There are advertisements on the radio going into detail about the numerous things to do here that families will remember forever. Although tourism brings money into the city because there are a countless amount of activities that require money, or a parking fee, I feel as if tourism is gradually taking over hot springs, and making its residents feel overwhelmed. When tourists are out and about with their families, it is so easy to recognize them because they are either holding camera, dressed the same, wearing a shirt that says something to do with Hot Springs, or not using the pedestrian crosswalk. I have seen 2 instances of wrecks because of tourism. Tourism is not the primary cause for wrecks but here in this city, it happens. There are specified cross-walks for pedestrians, and if they see something they want to take a picture of, they run into the street (an entire family), otherwise known as jay walking, and people have had to stomp their breaks...

How to Save Energy in Your House

...Heating & cooling About half of your energy use is for heating and cooling your house or apartment. Among the simple, and free, ways to improve efficiency: Move furniture away from air registers so that heated air can circulate freely. On sunny, chilly winter days open the drapes or curtains on the south and west side to take advantage of passive solar heating. Adjust your thermostat before leaving for work. You can cut your heating and cooling costs by 10 percent by adjusting the thermostat 7-10 degrees for eight hours a day. A programmable thermostat makes this easier. Installing a programmable thermostat is a low cost way to cut energy costs and there are others: Check your air filter monthly and change it if it looks dirty. Change it every three months — at least. A dirty filter makes your heating/cooling system work harder. Sealing and insulating your air ducts provides big bang for your buck, even if it is not the best way to spend a Saturday. Your tax dollars paid for a do-it-yourself guide to sealing and insulating air ducts that can be found on the Energy Star website. Hot water Heating hot water for baths, laundry and dishwashing gobbles up about 18 percent of the energy used in a typical household. If you have an electric hot water heater, it uses more than twice the energy of any other appliance in the house. Taking cold showers will cut your energy use, but here are some more pleasant ways to save: Changing...

Thankfully, there are some reliable signs to look for when evaluating whether a unit can make it through the hottest days of summer. Take a look at the following to stay prepared: 1. Environmental Sustainability In Australia

...Not every house you are going to visit, see pictures of or live in is going to be ecologically sustainable. Ecological sustainability refers to the capacity of the biosphere to meet the needs of the present generation, without hindering future generations from being able to meet their needs (reference). There are many factors that need to be considered to ensure that the house you are going to live in is as ecologically sustainable as possible. Currently in Australia, a great majority are living in homes that contradict the idea of living ecologically sustainable. They are living in homes that are too hot or too cold, waste energy and are expensive to rum. Not only this but they are also homes that use far more water than what is necessary , and are made of materials that damage our health and the environment around us. However, by using good design principles, Australians can not only save energy, water and money, but also create a more enjoyable and comfortable home...

Tankless Water Heater

...even when the owner is not using is called the standby heat loss. Installing a tank-type water heaters will not taking away the usable area, but also increasing your utilities bills. Instead of heating the water 24 hours, tankless water heaters generate hot water when you need to use it, and that can help minimize the utilities bills, as well as the environmental impact. Tankless systems are using natural gas, propane or electric to operate the system, and the system will generate heat by using an extremely powerful heat exchanger. The heat exchanger will activated once there are incoming flow water and will transfer the heat that has generated by the burner to the water that is coming out from the faucet. In this way, when the owner turn on the hot water tap, the supply water will be circulate through the activated exchanger by the copper coil, which will able to provide hot water as an output. Tankless water heaters have two assortments, these are include the “point of use heaters” and “whole house heaters”. Comparing these two tankless system, the “point of use heater” is a smaller system and will only able to support two outlets in a role. On the other hand, “whole house heater” is a larger system and more costly, however it can support more outlet at one time. Depends on the usage of...

Gucci

...Theresa Ramos 10 September 2014 English 111-05 Essay #1 Version 1 Hot Wheels Hearing the commercial “Hot Wheels” is an attention catcher. Growing up as little boy, all I had were toy cars. That’s what the majority of kids had as a child, their toy cars which were hot wheels. When I went to the park, I would see other kids play with their toy cars and scream “Hot Wheels!” Hot wheels would be in commercials during every kids show from Nickelodeon, Disney, KTLA Saturday mornings. When I see a Hot Wheels commercial, I see nice cars going in extreme speeds and crashing into one another thinking that it was okay to do so. This toy brand does a great job in persuading little boys to get this type of toy. When Lin talks about Barbie and how every little girl wants it due to the marketing of Mattel, “Constantly feeding the public with newer shinier toys, the Barbie enterprise illustrates America’s propensity for consumerism. Upon close examination, Barbie products foster materialism in young females through both their overwhelmingly large selection and their ability to create a financially carefree world for children, sending the message that excessive consumption is acceptable. This consequently perpetuates the misassumption that ‘ the American economy is an endlessly fertile continent whose boundaries never need be reached”. I agree with what Lin is saying because Mattel does a great job to persuade kids get their product thinking that it’s okay to have more. Every Saturday...

Tea Trends

...of global hot drink markets. In some places like Asia-Pacific, tea even take up 67 percentages of the whole market value. European countries, like England, are also fond of tea. As the middle class in the world is increasing, demand for tea will also increase. Nowadays, there are two important trends about tea that tea merchants and tea companies should take note of. First, Chinese people are more and more likely to drink in western-culture coffee houses. Second, many coffee selling shops tend to add tea into their menu. In China, drinking coffee is becoming more and more popular among people and the coffee houses are now very common to see. Chinese people, especially young one, like to sit at coffee house and drink coffee for a whole afternoon because that will make them feel good about themselves: buying a cup of expensive coffee makes them feel they are wealthy (Anber, 2013). Other than this, drinking coffee in coffee house also represents a modern life style as Henning said coffee house is “a necessary site for men and women sporting a modern lifestyle and a means of personal expression and distinction”. In addition, Anber remarks that Chinese are fond of western culture and value the association that coffee has with western countries. Last but not least, the service in coffee bars is good. The waiters in coffee houses all have been trained before and its’ environment is relaxing and comfortable. These reasons all contributes to the prosperity of coffee houses in China...

Energy

...from regions where there are active volcanoes. Hot springs, geysers, pools of boiling mud, and fumaroles are the most easily exploited sources. The ancient Romans used hot springs to heat baths and homes, and similar uses are still found in Iceland, Turkey, and Japan. The true source of geothermal energy is believed to come from radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth. Electricity is one of the biggest outputs of geothermal energy. It was first recorded to produce electricity in 1904 in Italy. There are now geothermal power plants in operation in New Zealand, Japan, Iceland, the US and elsewhere. For the generation of electricity, hot water, at temperatures ranging from about 700 degrees F, is brought from the underground reservoir to the surface through production wells, and is flashed to steam in special vessels by release of pressure. The steam is separated from the liquid and fed to a turbine engine, which turns a generator. In turn, the generator produces electricity. Spent geothermal fluid is injected back into peripheral parts of the reservoir to help maintain reservoir pressure. If the reservoir is to be used for direct-heat application, the geothermal water is usually fed to a heat exchanger before being injected back into the earth. Heated domestic water from the output side of the heat exchanger is used for home heating, greenhouse heating, vegetable drying and a wide variety of other uses. Hot water and steam exist at many subsurface locations...

Installing Plumbing

...to run water to the toilette, sink and shower. 1. Prior to building the bathroom make sure that there is adequate accessibility to run copper pipes to the area where the bathroom will be located. 2. After bathroom is built and the configuration of toilette, sink and shower is complete make either a mental or written pattern of how you will connect the pipes. Remember you have hot and cold water. The sink and shower need both while the toilette needs only cold water. 3. Measure distances between toilette, shower and sink to have a general idea of how much copper pipe you will require. Always get about 10 feet extra just in case of a bad measurement or an adjustment in plan. 4. Drill 3 holes in wall near the toilette and sink to accommodate the shut-off valves: toilette gets 1 and sink gets 2. 5. Attach shut-off valves to 9 inch copper pipe segments and install so that valves are inside bathroom and other end is in the crawl space. 6. Attach copper pipe segments to shower on/off fixture so that the ends are in crawl space. 7. Measure copper pipe so that each segment connects with the corresponding hot or cold water shower on/off fixture or shut off valve. Make sure the ends of the pipe segments are clean with a shine. Use fine grained sand paper. Dry fit these segments only. (Dry fit means that no flux or solder has been used.) 8. Measure each segment at least twice! Remember the old adage: Measure twice, cut once! 9. As you cut each segment dry fit it with the required copper...
