Orphans all have a few things in common: they have somehow lost their parents to death or neglect. After reading a novel about an orphan named Tree-ear and a story about a Romanian orphan named Izidor Ruckel. Tree-ear and Ruckel both had similarities and many differences. They both had caretakers, but the caretakers treated them differently, which change the way they acted.

All orphans have the same beginning: being without a parent. Caretakers are the most vital role for orphans. Tree-ear and Ruckel both have caretakers for their primitive years. Tree-ear meets Crane-man as a toddler. As Tree-ear grew older Crane-man is always there for him and in return Tree-ear takes care of Crane-man by doing everyday tasks. Ruckel grew up in a Romanian orphanage. He had the adults in the orphanage, a sergeant mother, and at the age of eleven found his forever home. Another similarity is, they both got adopted. Crane-man gave Tree-ear love and cared for him. Also, Tree-ear did not have to compete with anyone to get Crane-man’s attention. Tree-ear treated other people by caring. Ruckel’s caretakers were very different from Tree-ear’s. Some Ruckel caretakers beat him and some liked him. Even when given love by his forever home, he did not know how to respond. Another difference is, Tree-ear was strong, loving, healthy, and hardworking, but Ruckel was unhealthy, and weak. Also, Tree-ear’s caretaker, Crane-man, did not have anyone else to show love and compassion. Ruckel had to compete with all the other children in the Romanian orphanage. Because of Crane-man’s kindness, Tree-ear took care of Crane-man. Ruckel did not take care of anyone but himself. He occasionally had to watch the other children, but he never really cared for any of
