Description #1

It is not very often you see a coffee shop in a super market, but this is what makes this Starbucks different than most. This shop is situated at the entrance of the store and is quite refreshing to smell the aromas of fresh ground coffee as you enter. The entire store is illuminated nicely with fluorescent lights. In the short distance you can hear the sounds of shopping carts strolling along the tiled floor. The stock boys are busy shuffling around newly arrived produce. Across the way there is a florist shop, the mixture of the different floral scents and the smells of coffee seem to have a nice relaxing effect as you sit quietly and observe the signs and sounds of this nice shop. Although the shop is located in a busy Super Market, I feel that this is a wonderful addition the already pleasant appeal of this wonderful place.

Description #2 The coffee shop located inside of the Kroger Super Market is rather unusual. It is unusual in the fact that it is inside of a busy Super Market. One would think a coffee shop is a place to sit, relax, and maybe read a good book or story. This is hardly a place to relax. Sounds of feet pattering on the hard flooring, and shopping carts rolling and rumbling down the aisles can be heard constantly. There florist shop adjacent to the Starbucks can be a bit overwhelming as the scents of the flowers and plants can be a bit strong. The lighting in the store is a bit too bright and harsh to read a book while you drink a coffee. Even though this coffee shop does serve delicious drinks, I find it a bit too distracting to use at its full potential.

Narrative The strategies that were used in producing this were stating my intentions directly. At the beginning of each narrative the first few sentences start with a positive view or a negative view. This gives the reader the

It is nearly impossible to sunbathe and relax on the shore. There are too many loud, obnoxious and usually intoxicated college kids running around and causing a scene. Since you can no longer sip on your own beer on the beach, you can get one at the overpriced establishments surrounding the beach. One can always get lost on the boardwalk as well, the crowds of people and all of the pan handling bums can be overwhelming just to look at some cheesy San Diego souvenirs. If you are looking for fun and relaxation in the sun, Pacific Beach is not the beach for that. In my two above paragraphs, I described Pacific Beach as place that someone would want to check out and enjoy, and in the other paragraph I simply made this a place to avoid. In my positive paragraph I tried to tell the reader how nice the ocean beach were. In my...

...I sit on the old courthouse steps in the town square of Denton in the great state of Texas. The square is filled with people from all walks of life. Nestled between two universities and surrounded by residential neighborhoods, this place is constantly alive with people coming and going. I find myself humming along to the sounds of music coming from a group of young college kids who have set up their instruments and are performing on the courthouse lawn for all to enjoy. A gentle breeze picks up and with it is carried a glorious scent of bbq wafting over from one of the local restaurants. This place plays host to many festivals throughout the year. From where I am seated I can see the strings of white LED lights strung throughout the trees on the courthouse lawn. In the evening these lights are turned on creating a lovely ambiance. This is the type of place where the waitress at the diner knows your name and order as soon as you walk in the door. This is that small town America that for so many years I looked for and finally have found. I sit on the steps of the old courthouse here in Denton, Texas. The courthouse square is packed with all sorts of people. Many have walked here from a few blocks away due to the limited parking options. Just a few feet from me, an amateur band of college kids have set up and are using the courthouse lawn as an open air practice studio. Walking about the square, darting in and out of the waves of people, I duck into a diner. The waitress...

...Two Descriptions Paper English Composition Jesse R. Guy Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Description #1 The cold, dense air is filled with the ever increasing sounds of whirring engines and the dull roar of never-ending road traffic. The potent smells of fuel and exhaust blow across my position followed by the putrid smells of burning rubber and hot brake material. It is night and the stars are as bright, making the world seem like such a small and insignificant place. Aircraft pass over, giving off their locations with small flashing lights and harsh, powerful noise. Condensation collects on the grass, wetting my shoes with its moisture, making things slippery and cold. The wind can be heard rustling over the large, towing concrete and metal building behind me. The sounds of shuffling feet and objects being carried or dragged are heard in the slight silence. I cannot place the location of the shuffling as it is off in the darkness, too far away to scale its distance or direction or if it is something to be concerned with. Description #2 As the cool air is brought in with the night, sounds of aircraft wafting through the air and automobiles scurrying their way along their paths fill the air. The day’s operations are ceasing and the smells of equipment being shut down and vehicles coming to a halt are dwindling with time. The night begins to offer its nightly starlight show, with millions of quaint, twinkling stars like a distant fireworks show happening so far away...

...Childhood” suggest that the author is retelling the events of an early childhood experience from the viewpoints of herself as an adult. Ms. Dillard’s essay uncovers the differences between how adults and children view the world and seek happiness. However, there are a couple points to this essay. It seems as though, one of the author’s main points was to convey the message that some of the simplest moments in her life were also the happiest and most memorable. For example, she says, “I got in trouble throwing snowballs, and have seldom been happier since”. Also, I noticed that the author seemed to be motivated to inspire readers to chase life’s experiences passionately until one is satisfied. In the essay the author uses two rhetorical modes: narration and description. Ms. Dillard uses narration to describe her perspective of what it was like to be a child in America. In addition to using narration she also describes the intricate details of that particular winter day “Six inches of new snow had just fallen. We were standing up to our boot tops in snow on a front yard trafficked Reynolds Street slowly and evenly; they were targets all but wrapped in red ribbons, cream puffs.” (91). In relation to the unit theme: The shaping of Identity this writing piece uses an autobiographical narrative and flashback writing techniques to portray the American Childhood. Ms. Dillard’s perspective of an American childhood was quite accurate and helped me to remember my own childhood. I really enjoyed...

...Narration Around 2 a.m. something woke Charles Hanson up. He lay in the dark listening. Something felt wrong. Outside, crickets sang, tree-frogs chirruped. Across the distant forest floated two muffled hoots from a barred owl. It was too quiet. At home in New Jersey, the nights are filled with the busy, comforting sounds of traffic. You always have the comforting knowledge that other people are all around you. And light: At home he can read in bed by the glow of the streetlight. It was too quiet. And much too dark. Even starlight failed to penetrate the 80-foot canopy of trees the camper was parked beneath. It was the darkest dark he had ever seen. He felt for the flashlight beside his bunk. It was gone. He found where his pants were hanging and, as he felt the pockets for a box of matches, something rustled in the leaves right outside the window, inches from his face. He heard his wife, Wanda, hold her breath; she was awake, too. Then, whatever, was outside in the darkness also breathed, and the huge silence of the night seemed to come inside the camper, stifling them. It was then he decided to pack up and move to a motel.
