Reasons supporting vegetarianism are inarguable since becoming a vegetarian is scientifically proven to improve one’s lifestyle in several different ways. First and most importantly to many, vegetarianism improves one’s health tremendously. Secondly, it can improve or display one’s spirituality and beliefs. Another reason for changing to a vegetarian lifestyle that most people don’t know is for the ecology and our surroundings. All of the above reasons and many more show that vegetarianism is a wonderful enhancement to anyone’s overall life. Health should be a considerable priority in every individual’s life and vegetarians are proven to be healthier than carnivorous humans in various ways. First, medical studies show that a human being’s body was not made to be carnivorous (for example; humans have no fang s or claws) and because are digestive system was not made to digest meat, a vegetarian diet is much easier and healthier for our bodies. All signs are indicating that it will, indeed, continue to grow. 7.3 million people in the United States are vegetarian and 3.2 of the total population in the world do not eat meat (Vegetarianism 8). If one loves life, why not try vegetarianism? Having a vegetarian diet not only saves animals, but also improves health and uses less of the planet’s diminishing resources. In 2010, each person in the US ate an average of 57.5 pounds of beef, 46.5 pounds of pork, and 82 pounds of chicken. Many strong followers of this diet claim it is unnecessary to take an animal’s life when vegetarian options are available (Vegetarianism 3). On average, there are 115 million pigs, 35 million cows, and 9 billion birds killed each year for food. Many food animals in the United States are not slaughtered humanely. The US Humane Slaughter Act or (HMSA) set up rules and regulations stating cows and pigs to be stunned unconscious before they are slaughtered to minimize their suffering. However, birds such as turkeys or chickens are an exception to this rule and are not “relieved” from any pain. The environments in which these animals are raised in are cruel. Over 50% of the meat eaten today from the US comes from confined animal feeding operations where animals live in filthy overcrowded spaces (Maurer 13).
