“Hey, thanks for telling me.”-with a soft voice and a big smile. Does it sound familiar to you? Perhaps the response seems good and polite on the surface, but people might be very frustrating deep inside. Truly, the burden of societal expectation forbids people to share their true feeling and opinion with others, therefore a genuine interaction becomes so rare in the society. Individuals who desire personal success must follow the society rules and meet its expectation. Although U.S. government encourages gender equality, but the society remains the same; it has a higher expectation on women over men. In the article “Why Women Smile”, Cunningham evaluates on how societal expectation and personal goal evolves women’s behavior in their daily

...Went Home”, the persona has her reference on married men whom think of her as a friend and nothing more. Not a woman to them but a girl (Zefferino). However, they have a high perception of her personality but don’t have feelings for her like she does for them. “I had an air of mystery”. The men referenced had the persona think that the relationship that they had could turn out to be more than it seemed to be. They think of her as kind, clean and humorous. Despite this they don’t want to be in a relationship with her. The men that the poet references in the poem liked the persona because of her physical attributes and wanted to get involved with her physically, sexually. They wanted a physical relationship (Zefferino). “They liked my smile, my wit, my hips”. The attributes in this line specify in order the number of men that the persona desired, three men. The imagery keys the picture of a woman that receives the kind of love that she thinks she ought to be given. The persona is insecure and has a low self-pride because of the rejection that she faces. Men want to lay with her but do not want to stay with her because they all return to their wives. The last sentence of the first two stanzas, shows that the persona is willing and expecting to be used sexually by men that she has. The happening is predictable and repeats the notion that this mistreatment is happening to her or at least she is letting it to happen to her (Zefferino). This poem has a total of three stanzas...

Byron

...She Walks In Beauty By: Lord Byron (George Gordon) She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent! "She Walks in Beauty" is a poem written in 1814 by Lord Byron. One of Lord Byron’s most famous, it is a lyric poem that describes a woman of much beauty and elegance. TITLE: What’s Up With the Title? We usually refer to this poem simply by its first line, "She Walks in Beauty." But the first line does more than introduce the subject of the poem – a beautiful woman. The first line of the poem (and therefore the title) is an apparently conscious echo of the famous sonnet by William Shakespeare, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" (Sonnet 18). Except, of course, instead of comparing the beautiful woman to a "summer's day," Byron compares her to "night." So he's not just setting up a contrast between night and day, he's also setting up a contrast between himself...

...section, concisely (briefly) summarize the main purpose(s) of this research study (conducted by Ambady and colleagues)? The main purpose of this research study is to find out if homosexual people can really identify another person’s sexual orientation. Many gays and lesbians say they can detect sexual orientation, but there is a common idea that we cannot easily tell sexual orientation just from appearance, so researchers try to examine if they have really the ability. There was actually another study that says sexual orientation can be precisely judged even with limited information. Therefore, another purpose is to examine whether homosexual people can accurately detect sexual orientation. 2. In your own words, provide a concise summary of (a) Impression Formation and (b) the Information Integration Theory (from the PPT slides) (a) Impression formation is the process by which a person perceives and integrates piece of information to form a coherent impression about another person. Union Labor Relations Representative

...Guest Speaker Summary Paper Assignment Alison Hamway – Guest Speaker Alaison Hamway is a Labor Relations Representative for the ‘Oregon Nurses Association’. Her objective today was to present ‘Labor Relations from the Union Perspective’. A Labor Relation Representative works for the Union, and assists in labor negotiations, grievance processing, dispute resolution and other labor relations activities between management, and staff. Such dealings are usually brought about, because Mr. Owner wants to make more money, and pay less - with substandard work conditions, this stresses out the employee which creates conflict. The reason for the Labor Unions back in the day especially for nurses, was because of the poor and dangerous working conditions, long hours, lack of equal pay , the need for better benefits, and patient care demands. A worker alone - has very little power - negotiating with an employer; however through the Union, with the representative like Alison, together they have the clout to realize results through bargaining and negotiating. Labor Unions use to be extremely powerful and popular compared to today. Today labor Unions are not as prevalent due to all of the labor laws to protect the worker; however there is still a place for Unions and they are still going strong, according to Alision Hamway. The Labor Union today is still a very powerful weapon. Her job is exciting and she seems to be extremely passionate about her work - representing the ‘Oregon Nurses...

...Selection: The Rocking-Horse Winner 2. Author: D.H. Lawrence was born in England and wrote this story to demonstrate issues with men and women that are in relationships. 3. Theme: The main theme that is being expressed throughout the short story is that absolute power corrupts humans. The little boy, Paul, had the power to guess who would win the next horse race and it is because of this, he was able to gain lots of money. It would only after he had gained all this money that he began to realize that this was not the right thing to be done. 4. Summary of the Selection: The story begins with the narration of Paul’s mom. She is a beautiful woman with many features, yet she does not have any luck. The reason why she had no luck was because she married someone who was unlucky. It was because of this unluckiness that she was unable to bring in a sufficient source of income to tend to her children. Paul then began to realize that he himself had luck, and that the more he rode on a horse of his, the more he was able to guess which horse would win the next derby or race. As time progressed in the novel, he began to become unlucky and this unluckiness was eating him alive. Soon he was barley able to function or better yet even think. As the story comes to an end he dies because of uncertainty. 5. Figurative Language: Personification and Smile: “ And then the house whispers at you like people laughing behind your back” (pg 314) Simile: “The voices in the house suddenly went...

A Short Guide to Effective Public Speaking

...A Short Guide to Effective Public Speaking by Stephen D Boyd, PhD, CSP Delivering an effective presentation to 20 or to 200 people is difficult. Because listeners have better access to information since the internet became commonplace, audiences expect more content from speakers today. In addition, because of the entertainment slant of most media today, audiences want a presentation delivered with animation, humor, and pizzazz. If you would rather spend your time preparing your content than reading a book on public speaking, this is an article especially for you! From my experiences in delivering over l500 speeches during the past 20 years, here is a quick guide to giving an effective and interesting presentation your very first time. Begin with something to get the attention of the audience This might be a startling statement, statistic, or your own story. Listeners pay close attention when a person begins with, “Two weeks ago as I was driving to work a car pulled out in front of me….” You could begin with a current event: “You might have read in the paper this morning about the flood that….” A question is another way to make people listen. “How many of you feel our society spends too much on medical care?” might be a way to begin a presentation about curbing costs. Whatever technique you use, when you grab the attention of the audience you are on your way to a successful speech. Second, be energetic in delivery Speak with variety in your voice. Slow down for a dramatic...

...Tyler Gullivan, Shannon Johnston, Sara Seeger, Colin Watts | Executive Summary Victoria’s Secret is one of, if not the most popular women’s lingerie and clothing store in the United States. They are known for their higher priced, sexy, and sometimes promiscuous clothing. Victoria’s Secret has come up with many different innovations after first opening their door, such as a make-up line, body care line, and PINK teenage line. The next logical step is for Victoria’s Secret to create a baby clothing line. The baby clothing line, entitled Baby Secret, would have various types of infant and toddler clothing, and would be classic and simple, yet fashion-forward. A focus group was interviewed to find out their feelings on the Victoria’s Secret brand as a whole, and the new baby line. From these findings, a rationale was built which helped form a new target segment, examples of possibly baby products, and recommendations of company changes in strategy and tactics. All of these elements confirmed the original proposition that the Victoria’s Secret new baby clothing line is the next logical step in the Victoria’s Secret expansion plan in order to generate more revenue, and capture a different target market. By capturing a different target segment with the baby clothing line, the hope is that these customers will become loyal Victoria’s Secret customers in future years. ...10 Things Happy People Do Differently 10 strategies happy people incorporate into their lives Published on October 16, 2012 by Paula Davis-Laack, J.D., M.A.P.P. in Pressure Proof Happiness is having a large, caring, close-knit family in another city. George Burns How happy are you and why? This is a question I spend a fair amount of time thinking about, not only as it applies to my own levels of happiness, but also as it applies to my family, friends, and the people who I work with. Since graduating with my master’s degree in positive psychology, I’ve worked with and observed thousands of people in a wide variety of settings, and happy people just flow with the groove of life in a unique way. Here is what they do differently: 1) They build a strong social fabric. Happy people stay connected to their families, neighbors, places of worship, and communities. These strong connections act as a buffer to depression and create strong, meaningful connections. The rate of depression has increased dramatically in the last 50-75 years. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of mortality in the world, impacting nearly one-third of all adults (Murray & Lopez, 1996). While several forces are likely behind this increase, one of the most important factors may be the disconnection from people and their families and communities.
