Windshield survey is the process of walking/driving around a community to abreast with firsthand information or the characteristics of the population and infrastructure as well as well as potential health risks of the population in a defined area. Stanhope and Landcaster (2013) explained windshield survey as “equivalent of a community head-to-toe assessment” (p.220). In this study, I drove through this community understudy three times, days and night, because of its’ large area size. The following were the findings on January 17-20th, 2017.

...Windshield survey is primarily performed by driving around a community and taking notes of observations and dynamics of the community resulting in a basic description of the community, its members, and identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the particular community. According to Harkness and DeMarco, (2012), the basis of a windshield survey is to acquire knowledge about a client’s community by conducting an appraisal of the environment in pursuance of comprehending more about where the client lives, their health obstacles, and health resources. The objective for a nurse to assess a community is to establish both positive and negative factors that affect the health of the people and generate health promotion strategies (Anderson and...

...5 Practical Methods Direct Observations and Windshield Surveys 50 Practical Methods D irect observations allow one to better understand the environment in which people interact and to see the things some residents may not be aware of, or to better understand a phenomenon. Direct observation may help distill useful information that may not be apparent from your other data collection methods. This type of data collection allows you, the observer, to choose a location, event, or phenomenon and then to directly observe human activities over a period of time. Getting Started Begin by vividly describing the location you are observing. Include details, but try not to get bogged down with clutter. These details may seem superfluous at the time, but future analysis may prove otherwise. You should also describe the people you see and what they are doing. Things to Consider Continually return to the main focus of the observation. Developing an observation form may help. A sample observation form can be found on pages 53–55. The form will help guide your observation and help you focus on specific items. You will need to determine the most appropriate sites and gear the timing of your observation toward the phenomena in question. For example, if you observe a site too early in the morning, you may miss social interactions later in the evening that shed light on your community. You may want to observe different sites at various times to make the best...

Windshield Survey

...Community health nurses treat communities through the application of the nursing process. The process is community focused rather than treating the individual. Phase one begins with identifying a community. Phase two is the assessment phase consisting of data collection, interpretation, and analysis. The collection of direct data may be done through focus groups, interviews, observation, and windshield surveys. Denver, Colorado was the focus of my windshield survey, and I saw more in one day than I ever noticed as a resident for four years. I recognized that drug use is prevalent, there are a large number of medical marijuana dispensaries, and the homeless population is greater than I thought previously. Each of these issues in Denver warrants their own community nursing diagnosis. Three priority nursing diagnoses, based solely on the windshield survey, are risk of violence among the businesses of Denver related to neighboring medical marijuana dispensaries, risk of crime among the residents of Denver related to prevalent drug use and sales, and risk of malnutrition among the homeless population of Denver related to lack of access to adequate nutrition. Medical marijuana dispensaries are popping up in every neighborhood of Colorado, but in Denver alone there are sometimes two dispensaries per block. This puts people in the area at risk for increased violence, such as beatings, murder, and violent burglary. If the state regulators limited the number of dispensaries per...

...Survey Reflection Community health nurses treat communities through the application of the nursing process. The process is community focused rather than treating the individual. Phase one begins with identifying a community. Phase two is the assessment phase consisting of data collection, interpretation, and analysis. The collection of direct data may be done through focus groups, interviews, observation, and windshield surveys. Drug sales and use is visible throughout the Denver area, and the types of illicit drugs used goes well beyond medical marijuana. As I drove around performing my windshield survey, I witnessed people on the street handing money to another person and orally taking what they were given in exchange, and others would put what they were given into their pockets. Marijuana is openly used and rarely questioned. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center (2007), much of the drug-related crime consists of “assaults, home invasions, homicides, and robberies” (para. 1). The community health nurse could decrease the amount of drug use and sales in the area by educating the residents of the area and organizing neighborhood watch groups. This can empower the residents of the area to take a stand and work with law enforcement to decrease the drug activity in the area. The homeless rate in Denver is increasing because of loss of jobs, and the moderate weather draws homeless people from other areas to reside in Denver. There are shelters and food resources...

Community Assessment and Analysis

...dallas community assessment and analysis Community Assessment and Analysis of Dallas Pennsylvania Community Assessment and Analysis of Dallas Pennsylvania The purpose of a community health assessment and analysis is to identify a community’s assets and issues in regards to its environment, social structure and population (Dreher, Shapiro, & Asselin, 2006). The community assessment utilizes objective data such as vital statistics and demographic data, but also encompasses subjective data that is obtained through a windshield survey and through the conduction of focus groups of community residents. Analysis of this comprehensive data, enables advanced practice nurses to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a community and design interventions to either enhance or help the community. For this community assessment, the Borough of Dallas, Pennsylvania was investigated using the community-as-a-partner approach. History Dallas is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Dallas was created by a charter granted April 21, 1879 from the land entirely within Dallas Township. The township had been formed in 1817 and was named for Alexander J. Dallas, who was the sixth United States Secretary of the Treasury (Epodunk, 2011). Windshield Survey

...Windshield Survey NUR/405 December 3, 2012 Pamela Smith Abstract Windshield Survey A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). Community health is the process or characteristics that allow a community’s population and economy to survive. Community health is defined as the meeting of collective needs through identification of problems and management of behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society (Stanhope, & Lancaster, 2012). The community is the client if a nurse works towards helping the community even when this is accomplished by helping one individual at a time. The community is the client only when the nursing focus is on the collective or common good of the population instead of on individual health. Although the nurse may work with individuals, families or other interacting groups, aggregates, or institutions, or within a population, the resulting changes are intended to affect the whole community (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). The Community Health Partnership (CHP) is a community development process that engages communities...

Windshield Survey

...Statement and Introduction Understanding the relationship between health outcomes to the environment is part of the foundation of modern nursing (Nightingale, 1969). A windshield survey is an informal method used by community health nurses to obtain basic knowledge about a given community. It provides a subjective view of the various physical characteristics of a communal area as observed while driving or walking through a neighborhood. Community assessment is an essential function of community nursing. Understanding the various types of community will help clarify the process. The first type of community described is a “geopolitical community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177). It is an aggregate of people living or working in a defined geographic area. The second is “phenomenological community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177), which is a collection of people sharing common interests, or philosophies and inter/intra personal connections. Borders for this type of community are not as clear as a geopolitical community. A phenomenological community can exist within a geopolitical community. An example of this is the homeless. The third is a broader view, encompassing a society, a nation, or the international community of the world as we know it. Community Nursing

...Running Head: COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING INTERVENTION Community Health Nursing Intervention During the initial surveys and studies performed, the Town of Breckenridge was shown to be healthy and affluent. But, even with this affluence, and the services available because of it, there were populations that were shown to be vulnerable. These vulnerabilities are in part due to lifestyle choices of some residents as well as the access to health care due to job opportunities. The purpose of this paper is to address some of the community concerns raised as well as narrowing down to one priority issue. Interventions, expected outcomes and supporting documentation will be presented. Three priority community health and safety concerns Three priority community health and safety concerns are: risk for increased substance abuse among young adults related to municipal legalization of marijuana, increased access to drugs and drug paraphernalia, and wide acceptance of drug usage; risk for severe injury/trauma of young adults related to age and young male demographic, participation in extreme sports (skiing, snowboarding), accepted culture of risky behaviors involving gravity and hard, fixed objects. And, after completing the assessment of the Summit Community Care Clinic, risk for ineffective management of therapeutic regimen among uninsured and under-insured residents related to the inability to afford healthcare and preventative care due to lack of insurance offered...

...community make up its core, and to apply the steps of the nursing process (Anderson and McFarlane, 2011). The assessment was based on observations of the community, interview data from a nursing home director, and selected published data related to the healthcare and social services assessed. Assessment data was analyzed, and conclusions and inferences drawn from the analysis will be presented in the paper. Windshield Survey On October 28th at approximately 4:00 pm an observation of Ponchatoula was conducted while driving through the city’s limits. This survey was done to acquire an overall health assessment of Ponchatoula’s environment including buildings and people out and about. The city itself appeared dated as evidenced by the architecture, especially on E. Pine St. However, for being the age they are, the buildings appeared well kept with clean paint jobs. Sidewalks lined each side of E. Pine, which runs east to west through the center of Ponchatoula. Witnessed were 5 men riding bikes, numerous people shopping downtown, and only 1 woman sitting and smoking a cigarette. The focus of the windshield survey was non-acute care and social services. Hate Crime Analysis

...Hate Crime Analysis Bonule Johnson AJS/514 Professor: Reyes 7/25/16 For this hate crime analysis paper I choose the group of African Americans because of the fact that they are being targeted in social media for police brutality crimes. Hate Crimes resemble messages to individuals from a specific gathering that they are unwelcome in a specific neighborhood, group, school, or work environment. Detest hate crimes are criminal offenses, normally including viciousness, terrorizing or vandalism, in which the casualty is focused on account of race, sexual introduction, religion, ethnicity, sex or political alliance. Detest wrongdoings can happen at home, at school, at spots of love, at work, in the city - for all intents and purposes anyplace. There have been some cases that have been committed during the time that our president Barack Obama won his presidency. “On Election Night 2008, Ralph Nicoletti and Michael Contreras, both 18, and Brian Carranza, 21, of Staten Island, New York decided shortly after learning of Barack Obama's election victory "to find African Americans to assault," according to a federal indictment and other court filings. The men then drove to a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Staten Island, where they came upon a 17 year-old African American who was walking home after watching the election at a friend's house. One of the defendants yelled "Obama!" Then, the men got out of the car and beat the youth with a metal pipe and a collapsible police...

Corporate Social Responsibility

...Introduction Autoglass as we know it today has its origins in two separate companies. In 1969, Tony Bates started a small family business in Bedford called Windshields, which became well-known for its pioneering approach. In those days windscreens were made of toughened glass, which would smash if hit with sufficient force and the pieces of glass would end up inside the car. Autoglass was formed in 1974 and, by 1983, had over 40 branches and 100 mobile fitting units. In 1984, the two firms merged to become initially Autoglass Windshields and a year later the second part of the name was dropped - the name Autoglass remains to this day. The company presently has 180 branches and 900 mobile fitting units. Task 1 Mission: The mission is a statement of an organization that not only defines the goals of organization but also set up performance objectives accordingly. The mission statement is always a time bound i.e. a mission defined must be achieved within a certain time period. It is often set for period of 5 to 6 years. it may change but still holds the company with the needs of customer and vision (Steiner, 2010). Autoglass follows a mission “to win locally by applying skills globally”. In this statement, company laid a strong emphasis on the word local as they thrive to win its local customers by opening more than 100 branches across London.
