Apple’s famous 1984 advertisement speaks to the population because it follows the same type of format as the Daisy advertisement we watched earlier in class. They paint a colorless futuristic dystopia. In Apple’s case, it’s a colorless totalitarian government that snuffs out the idea of individualism. The viewer can identify this by the lack of color used to portray the populus, as well as every hallway and corridor being filled with TV screens and sound systems playing the same brainwashing message on repeat. The viewer of this advertisement is given a sense of unease by the emotionless and colorless faces of the people, and this creates a fear in the reader that if we keep mindlessly consuming technology, this could be the future of the …show more content…
The woman being chased by the police or government, is different than everyone else, the viewer can identify a strong sense of individualism contrary to the oppressed people in this futuristic dystopia. She is wearing bright red shorts and a bright white t shirt, with what from I can tell, is a computer insignia. She is running in a very powerful way, and she has a hammer in her hands. This character is meant to identify with the viewer, who may feel powerless or ostracized by society. This woman gives those people hope, because if she can break free from society maybe there is a chance the viewers can too. After the chase, our character reaches a large room where a man’s black and white face is shown covering the screen. This man’s face occupies the entirety of the screen, implying that this is the man in charge of this futuristic land. The black and white screen is a continuation of the theme of individualism and in this moment we can see the confrontation of individualism and collectivism. She is surrounded by peers who seem to be hypnotized by their oppressive

Accordingly, we should see similar characteristics in Japanese and Thai speakers during discussions within their respective social groups. However, this is not the case. This paper examines social talk during the task-oriented interaction of Japanese and Thai speakers. The analysis focuses on how the speakers of Japanese and Thai present themselves and construct rapport in casual group talk. Using the concept of consciousness deployed in ‘idea units’ (Chafe, 1980, 1994) and some semantic considerations, I identify three major differences in rapport construction between Japanese and Thai speakers. First, Japanese participants prefer to build common ground through discussion of communal topics and through dealing with the comprehensiveness and the orderliness of the situation, whereas Thai participants incline toward individual-oriented topics and independent styles of talk. Second, the Japanese show a preference for using softening devices and conventionalized expressions in group discussion while the Thais tend to use intensifiers and spontaneous expressions to indicate involvement and create a friendly and fun atmosphere.
