The Evolution of technology and communication from the past twenty years until today

In this day and age, there is hardly a need for face to face communication. With cell phones, email, and social media, we have and are becoming more and more socially awkward. Let’s go back twenty years from now, when most of today’s technology didn’t even exist. No one really had cell phones, or computers, maybe a beeper (pager) if you were lucky. So how did we get to where we are today? Today if a parent wants to find their child they have to text him or her, break ups happening via text or email, doctors are having video conferences from all parts of the world, some even aiding in life saving surgeries. Twenty years ago there were cell phones, the first cell phone was created in 1983, however they were very pricey averaging around 1,100 dollars, and not many families could afford this luxury. These phones were huge, with big buttons, and huge antennas. The battery life on these phones was only about an hour. Most homes in the early 90’s had only a landline phone. Communication was so much more personal back then. People came to your home to visit you and have a chat. People mailed letters and cards to family and friends far away. No one texted, or instant messaged. Kids passed notes in class, this generation of kids will never experience the fear of being caught and having to read the note aloud to the class. Our parents would call us in for dinner from the window, they didn’t text us or call our cell phones. Later on in the 90’s came the good old beeper. It was a small device used to page/beep a person for a small monthly fee. People could “beep” friends by dialing the person’s beeper number and then entering the number to be sent to the beeper. The beeper would then signal to the owner the number to

Technological Advancements in Communication

...Technological Advancements in Communication Name Essentials of Managerial Communication XCOM/285 Date Professor Technological Advancements in Communication Communication is necessary to run a business, and communication can take place in different forms. Two common types of communication are oral communication, and electronic communication. Technological advancements have improved business communication efforts, and save a business time and money. Although some businesspeople resist change, the advancements in communication still follow what is traditionally considered business communication. Oral communication can take place face-to-face, via the telephone. Electronic communication can take place via instant message, e-mail, and through announcements online. Some people prefer one method over the other, but both methods can be equally effective if all participants have good communication skills. Oral communication provides a slight advantage over electronic communication because participants can receive immediate clarification on any misunderstanding. The tone and message of electronic communication can be misinterpreted, and clarification may take several electronic communications until the message is clear. Today many businesspeople do not have time to meet face-to-face, or conduct business orally, so new technological advancements allow businesses to meet the needs of all people involved....

Technological Advancements in Communication

...Technological Advancements in Communication Advancement in technological communication listed in the article was collaborative tools. One in which is called the smartsheet. The smartsheet was a place where many companies or parties involved in communicating could add to which each of their ideas and findings. Even if several languages are used. Instead of hundreds of emails being corresponded, each person uses the smartsheet to communicate, sharing data and information. This method of collaborative communication is lower cost as low as $25 each month, compared to other collaborative methods such as the Web 2.o Mashup server software which can cost a company a minimum of $50,000. The Mashup Server software does offer more features where it acts as a one stop shop for research, training, communication, wiki and even instant messaging. I feel that the Mashup Server software would be more beneficial in a workplace because it logs all communication while keeping everyone formal. This form of communication is not traditional and would be hard to get everyone on board. If people are used to corresponding via email and instant messaging, implementing a new program would cause resistance to change. One reason the resistance to the change would arise would be because the difficulty of merging the new software with other operating software programs already in place or the level of difficulty in learning the new system. The reason it is not traditional is because it is newer than emailing...

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act, an extension of the Federal Wiretap Statute, was endorsed in 1986 (Justice Information Sharing, 2010). This was a necessary implementation with how technology was diversifying ways to communicate and share information. In order to oversee and safeguard technological advancements such as email, cordless and cell phone communications, and electronically stored data the federal government had to amend and sometimes put into operation new policies.
