I have learned so much this semester that I feel that I am one step closer to becoming a good teacher. My goal is to become a special education teacher, one that will give my students lessons that go beyond the classroom. I want to give my students the skills they need to thrive and acquire a better understanding of the world. To accomplish my goals, I feel that behavior modification is an imperative classroom management approach for me to use. It is essential to have additional managerial approaches to classroom management, like authoritative or instructional. As a special education teacher, one of my goals is to help my students learn to behave appropriately in and out of the school setting. I need to help my students understand what appropriate …show more content…
A token system would be a positive way of promoting appropriate behavior by giving students either an intrinsic or extrinsic rewards for even the smallest steps they take to achieve a higher goal. I understand that some students do not respond well when given long term goals, but they have an easier time with short term goals. For example, asking a student to stay in their seat and use quiet hands for fifteen minutes is an attainable goal for most students. After fifteen minutes if the student acted appropriately they get to fill in a happy face next to their time chart after they have five happy faces in a row, they would be given a “gold doubloon” which they can later trade in for extra time on the computer. I believe students respond better to positive reinforcements, but some students require negative reinforcement. Let's say there is a student who refuses to complete assignments so then they will have to fill in a sad face on their time chart. The next time they are given an assignment they are more likely to complete it because they do not want to have a sad face on their time chart. Punishment is a part of behavior modification, but I do not want to use it. I feel that just the word punishment has a negative connotation and should only be used as a last resort, for instance if a student is harming themselves or others. One day I can have one student be disruptive, the next have a different student be disruptive, and one day I may even have my whole class be on their best behavior, or have them all over the place. Since I know that my students can be very unpredictable I need to be prepared I cannot waste valuable instructional time to get my lesson plan or my materials ready. I want my classroom to run as smoothly as possible, which that in and of itself is a hard task. To have at least one part of my classroom set and organized will make things less overwhelming.
