Many people never really mean what they actually say. For example, when someone requests for something, there is usually a motive behind their request. (add example). Even writers do this. Some do it to not come across as harsh or cruel if they were to just say what they are meaning to say. These authors hide behind something little in order to avoid the underlying meaning. This is the case for American journalist, Claire Berlinski in her article, Ban the Burqa. Berlinski’s argument is ineffective because she lacks in logos and ethos which makes it clear that she has an ulterior motive behind her purpose of wanting to ban the burqa. Throughout Berlinski’s whole argument she constantly contradicts herself by claiming in the beginning of her article that agrees with freedom of religion, but by wanting to ban the burqa she is essentially wanting to ban how Muslims express their religion. She also goes on to say that it’s proven that rape goes down when women veil, yet she wants to take this right away from these women. Before I came to a realization that Berlinski had a different purpose behind the one she portrays, a factor that stood out to me was how Berlinski originally wrote this article for an American magazine called the National Review. It’s evident that Berlkinski is an intelligent journalist, so why wouldn’t she write this article concerning Muslims for an American based magazine? Her motive behind this is to get America on this bandwagon so someone of authority will take action. Berlinski believes that if America takes action first then Europe will follow suit. The way Berlinski addresses issues throughout the Muslim culture comes off as harsh and almost bitter from being called a whore while visiting a neighborhood of Balat Berlinski 2). While later in her article she describes veiling as being “cancerous” and compares it to Nazis, the KKK, and smoking (Berlinski 4).
