...Ellason Boyle ENG 3U Mr. Zago January 9 2012 Self-Discovery in ‘She’s Come Undone’ Self-discovery, by definition, is the act or process of achieving understanding or knowledge of oneself or, in other words, identifying your own individuality. To understand who you are is extremely important if one wants to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment. In reality, people struggle every day to uncover who they really are and for Ms. Price, this was no exception. Her life was not always stable which made her journey to discover herself extremely strenuous. Dolores Price, the main character in ‘She’s Come Undone’ by Wally Lamb, had many traumatic events that occurred during her life that persuaded her to discover who her inner self was as well as therapy and significant symbols that meant a lot to her through her journey. To begin with, Dolores Price had to overcome many traumatic and negative memorable events that life supplied her with. The thing that started it all was the miscarriage of her little brother Anthony and the separation of her mother and father. She, like a normal child caught in the middle of their parent’s separation, feels like the separation was her fault and that she could have prevented it. Another scarring event that she was forced to endure was being raped by her neighbour, Jack Speight, in eighth grade. After being raped Rita, Jack’s wife, has a miscarriage and Dolores, again, thinks that this is her fault. These lead to the other major problems...

It takes us on a journey where Chris Nielsen, played by Robin Williams, is willing to spend the rest of his life in hell, just to be able to hang with his wife for eternity. The movie begins with the encounter of the two soul mates, both who were spending their time on their sailboats, one of which had a red sail symbolizing seduction, love, sexuality, but also sacrifice and danger, the boat was owned by Annabella Sciorra who is played by Annie Nielsen , who happens to be Chris’ wife later on the movie. The film opened the country’s eyes to the creation of film and the industry that surrounds it. It also gave the world (particularly the West) its first filmic taste of the cultural, social and historical issues of 20th century Jamaica. It was not only successful in the eyes of its audience but also in the eyes of film critics worldwide. Geoff Parker writes “Indisputably the greatest Jamaican film ever made, The Harder They Come is also one of the finest films yet made about the third world.” (2001). At first glance Perry Henzell appears to be using a narrative to document Jamaican roots Reggae music (especially that of Jimmy Cliff); but although The Harder They Come went a long way towards creating a huge global Reggae following the film had many other underlying issues. I had just arrived home from a work out with the football team and my dad was calling my name. I ran up the stairs. He handed me the phone and said it was Brian Sipe, the Hall of Fame quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and my old high school football coach. After Coach Sipe coaching at my high school he became the quarterback coach and recruiting coordinator at San Diego State University. Curiously, I answered the phone and said, “Hello? Coach Sipe”.
