James Wilson and John Rutledge both contributed many things to the constitution. Wilson “fervently believed that the new government must be founded on the people” (pg 59) so he introduced the idea of the government being a completely democratic one to the convention (pg 59) Wilson fights for this when the delegates are deciding how to elect Senators, he “argued for the people to elect them directly.” (pg 64) however he loses this fight to the small states who wish to preserve their power (pg 66). On June 11th Rutledge and Wilson worked together with Dr. Franklin to create an alliance between the large states and slave states (pg 75) This alliance led to the three-fifths compromise (pg 78).
