Witch trials were a common thing back in the 1680’s-90, many people were killed. Anyone who was caught dealing with the devil was sentenced to death. Dealing with the devil was a very serious crime back then if you were accused of being a witch or talking to the devil or even being involved with witchcraft you were given death by being hanged. Being hanged was just one of the many punishments they gave. In both stories, the writer shows how the victims were treated and the difference between them both. The way both authors tell the story is very amusing. The writer tells the story as if someone is watching all of it happen. The watcher tells and shows the intensity of the witch trials.
Atwood told her story where there could be an understanding of character’s thought, and gave us a better understanding on what really happens when it’s time to be hanged while Miller wrote his play in many different views. Miller gave the feeling of his trail through the people of the village (Miller pg. 464 Abigail” (in a temper)”) while in Atwood play Half-Hanged Mary, tells her feeling about and thoughts in her own words. Atwood line 5” I didn’t feel the aimed word hit”. The overall feeling of the text is different.

In Miller’s play, the tone is different with the characters and the setting. Miller pg. 488 “it’s winter in here yet”. There’s a different feeling given off depending on the tone. The tone of both stories gives off different vibes of how to feel. In Miller’s play, the attitude within the conflict with the witch trials is what makes the drama. The drama gives us something to look forward to happing in the story. While Atwood’s poem, it’s from one person direct feelings to contribute to the tone.
