Following the dictionary, existentialism is a philosophical theory that “is centered upon the analysis of existence and the way humans find themselves existing in the world”; besides, it also “emphasizes the responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will”. In other words, it refers the freedom and how people are responsible for their action. "The Guest" is an example of an existential crisis because of Daru, the main character in this article, shows up his existential character clearly. For me, Daru's decision to let The Arab choose his own destiny is neither a heroic nor cowardly decision, but he did it for himself. At the beginning, he did not want to receive the task that delivering The Arab to the prison:

Political Ideology

...United States aren’t so equal and not exactly all that free. In the Dialogue readings, I have selected four of which I feel could be strongly applied to the political beliefs of both freedom and equality. In the “Self and Society” book complied of different readings and philosophical authors, I have chosen Albert Camus, B.F. Skinner, Horace Miner, and C. Wright Mills as comparisons to the ideas on freedom and equality. In Camus’ reading entitled “The Guest,” the schoolmaster named Daru is visited by a horseman, Balducci. Alongside Balducci is his captive prisoner, an Arab who remains nameless throughout the reading. Balducci instructs Camus to take the prisoner to police headquarters to face accusations against a supposed crime he had committed. Throughout the story, Daru is seen living well in his furnished and heated home that looks over an impoverished, cold and often corrupt land. This demonstrates quite obviously that not everyone is considered equal, as the rest of the land is cold and freezing while Daru is kept warm. Daru, who goes against Balducci’s orders, and remains true to his own personal freedoms of being able to make his own decisions, eventually sets the Arab free. In B.F. Skinner’s “The Evolution of a Culture,” he claims that we as individuals are not defined by our past, but by our behaviors (293 Skinner). If our behaviors are what define who we are, then this must define our freedoms as a culture, since we are being judged solely on our behaviors, making...

...The art of literature has developed of the years of time. There are some works of literature such as legends, myths, and biographies including autobiographies that glorify the aspects of the past and are considered to be the guide of the future. Authors like William Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, and Edgar Allen Poe use characterization through action to give the reader a sense of reality as to what the characters dealt with throughout the text. Frederick Douglass in the autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and the Arab prisoner in The Guest are two different works of literature that were written over one hundred years apart. They are both similar and different in some ways, but both of them through their actions allow us as readers to read between the lines of the text to apply the same strategies from the text into our own personal lives. Also, throughout each of the texts the characters were both held against their own will. Douglass was forced into his imprisonment in which he was held as a slave from the time he was born. According to Douglass, infants whose parents were enslaved were taken away from their mothers at a very early age. Specifically, in the text it clearly states “…before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired on some farm a considerable distance off, and the child is placed under the care of an old women, too old for field labor.”(pg.10) Likewise, children of today’s society are not taken...

Existentialism

...These four artists apply existentialist themes in their literature and even their private lives. The two themes that I found preeminent in these artists work are isolation and death. The four artists have a very philosophical cohesion between them. They all have a sense of isolationism in their works which makes their creations so unique. In Runaway by Kanye West, a phoenix falls to earth like a meteor and doesn’t know where she has ended up. The phoenix attempts to fit in with our society but she doesn’t know how to act in front of all these people so she is isolated. When the phoenix is at Kanye West’s dinner party, she sees a turkey that is about to be served for dinner and she is shocked and shrieks obnoxiously in front of all the guests and they look at her very differently and isolate her. In Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa is portrayed as a bug and people look at him very differently. Gregor is isolated in his home and can’t leave because he doesn’t want his parents to look bad. “During the day Gregor did not want to show himself in the window” (Kafka 30). This quote explains his isolationism and his self consciousness of him not wanting to be seen by others. Kafka and Kanye both include death in the end of their stories. Gregor and the phoenix have similar characteristics and end up having the same outcome. In the end of both stories the phoenix kills herself to end up in a better...

Hunters in the Snow

.... English Composition 1102 Fiction Writing Assignment Chapter 1 – “Hunters in the Snow” 1. Discuss the way Tub is presented in the opening scene. Does your assessment of his character change in the later scenes? The character of Tub was presented in the opening scene as someone who would not stand up for himself and was willing to be ridiculed and made fun of to be part of a group. He allowed his friends to take advantage of him by making him wait over an hour in the cold and snow, accepting this behavior without even an apology. Tub was a character with low self esteem and was embarrassed of his weight, which allows him to make excuses and lie to everyone. The assessment of Tub did not change at the end of the story. He was still the same character as in the beginning. He moved up in his position as friend to Frank which made him feel better, but at the expense of Kenny’s health. Tub still had low self esteem, but he ended up acting as selfish as Frank. Chapter 2 – “How I Met My Husband” 4.  Is Edie a sympathetic character? How does her status as “the hired girl” affect the way you respond to her as a reader?   Edie was a sympathetic character. Her self-described title “the hired girl” affects the reader’s response as it portrays her with low self esteem. She comes across as not fitting in because she was not in the same social standing as Dr. and Mrs. Peebles. The reader becomes sympathetic with Edie compared to the other characters due to her being a simple...

Indianization of English

...3. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN ENGLISH Indian English is a distinct variety of the English language. Many Indians claim that it is very similar to British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical similarities. Of course, one must keep in mind that not every linguistic item is used by every Indian English speaker and that a great deal of regional and educational differentiation exists. Even so, items can be identified which are indicative of Indian English speech and which are widely used. These operate on various phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic levels, which I will characterized with items brought up in the recorded discussions, in my previous experience with Indian English, and in scholarly writings about Indian English. References to the transcription excerpts (pages 17-26 of this report) are written, for example, as 1.3.4, which indicates Discussion 1, Excerpt 3, Item 4. 4. PHONOLOGY I was able to do very little on the phonological level. I set up a test to see if the English alveolar /t/ would be articulated as the Indian retroflex /t/ or as the dental /t/ in different phonological environments. The result was that the retroflex completely replaced the alveolar; in fact, it has been found that the entire series of English alveolar consonants tends to be replaced by retroflex consonants (Trudgill & Hannah 1994, p.128). One item that did come out of the experiment was that some Indian English speakers...
