ABSTRACT

Data ware housing is a booming industry with many interesting research problem. The data warehouse is concentrated on only few aspects. The discussion here is about the data warehouse design and usage in the case of the University of Nairobi Environment. Data warehouse can be built using a top-down approach, bottom – down approach or a combination of both. In this research paper we are discussing about the data warehouse design process.
Data Warehouse (DWH) systems are used by decision makers for performance measurement and decision support. Currently the main focus of the DWH research field is not as much on the interaction of the DWH with the organization, its context and the way it supports the organization’s strategic goals, as on database issues. The aim of the study is to emphasize and describe the relationship between the DWH and the organization with conceptual models, and to use this knowledge to support data interpretation with business metadata.

Data Warehousing

...Data warehousing is a fairly new but not so new development in the information systems field. Data warehousing can be traced back being in existence since the 1980’s when Teradata in 1983 introduced a database management system (DBMS) designed for decision support systems (Ponniah, 2010). The influence from the two Irish IBM architects Barry Devlin and Paul Murphy who in 1988 laid the foundations for what we call today a data warehouse in their original article “An Architecture for a Business and Information Systems” (Bouman & van Dongen, 2009). It was not long after that Bill Inmon, referred to as the father of data warehousing authored one of the most influential decision support books “Building the Data Warehouse” in 1991(Ponniah, 2010). Since then Prism Solutions in 1991 introduced the Prism Warehouse Manager software for developing data warehouses. The Data Warehousing Institute was also founded 1995 and has and continues to promote data warehousing by way of serving as the leading voice in the business world providing education, research, and support (Ponniah, 2010). With the business environment being more global, competitive, multifaceted and unpredictable there is a need for systems that would satisfy emerging business needs and new technological advances (Wixom & Watson, 2001). The enterprise for enhanced customer relations and e-commerce alone these days require large integrated repositories and advanced analytical repositories (Wixom & Watson, 2001). Data......

...Facts SAP HANA® – An In-Memory Data Platform for Real-Time Business Objectives Solution Benefits Quick Facts Fast, broad, and meaningful insight at your service Fast, broad, and meaningful insight at your service Real-time analytics No matter what business you’re in, your success may depend on one thing: insight. Not just insight gleaned from standardized reports and data, but insight gleaned from data across your entire enterprise – data that you can use the very second it’s created to help your business thrive. That’s the power of real-time business insight – and that’s the power of the SAP HANA® platform Historically, real-time business insight has not been possible because separate analytical and transaction databases require that numerous complex data models have to be built in order to make data meaningful to business users. There are also scale limitations, as large data sets from different sources in the company can’t be used simultaneously to provide meaningful and instant answers to complex questions. SAP HANA breaks traditional database barriers to simplify IT landscapes, eliminating data preparation, preaggregation, and tuning. You can instantly access huge volumes of structured and unstructured data, including text data, from different sources. SAP HANA is a completely reimagined platform for real-time business. It transforms business by streamlining transactions, analytics, planning, predictive, and sentiment data processing on a single......

Continental Airlines

...Continental Airlines Flies High with its Real-Time Data Warehouse John Paul Barber Schreiner University MKTG 4324, Business Intelligence Dr. Mark D. Woodhull February 16, 2015 Continental Airlines is the fifth-largest carrier in the United States as well as the eleventh largest carrier company in the world. The airline company provides service to 84 domestic and 53 international locations resulting in over 2000 daily flights. This high level of demand creates a large obligation for data and information to be properly stored and organized. Continental Airlines uses business intelligence and data warehousing to help collect their information and develop a system to accelerate decisions and construct flight schedules. Continental Airlines was founded in 1934 with a single-engine aircraft located in the southwestern United States. The company was doing well until 1994; Continental was in dire financial decline. The company had already filed for bankruptcy twice and was on the fast approach to file for the third and maybe final time. The sales of tickets began to fall due to the lack of focus on consumer concerns such as on-time percentages, baggage arrival problems, and constant overbooking. When Gordon Bethune became CEO of Continental in 1994, he initiated this plan. Continental Airlines uses a system called Go Forward that consists of several interrelated, concurrent actions Bethune selected to target the need for improvement in customer needs as well as...

Chain

...Supply Chain Logistics Systems Memo Laniece Seamon University of Phoenix ISCOM 352 January 21, 2013 The increased rate of change within the economy was driven by a number of large level forces, due to empowered consumers, technology, globalization, shifts in economic power, and regulations. All of these elements of change raised the importance of supply chain management as a strategic move to gain a competitive advantage. Supply chain management involves integrating three key components across the board within a company’s supply chain; they are information, product or materials, and cash flow. The order processing pertains to the flow of information within the logistics system, which includes several operations. Customers may be required to fill out an order form for requested products. The order is then transmitted and checked. The customer’s items are checked to see if it is in stock and then payment is verified. Next, the items are retrieved from the inventory, packaged and delivered along with their shipping documents. Lastly, the customer must be informed about the status of their order. Inventory management is an important role within logistics system operations and planning. Inventories are stockpiles of products or goods waiting to be transported, manufactured, or sold. Logistics management is a balancing act between minimizing costs and ensuring the availability of goals. Appropriate decisions must be made between key elements such as inventory......

Audit Program Design

...Audit Program Design Part III Tywana Bowman University of Phoenix ACC545/Financial Accounting Professor Michael DeMarco September 26, 2010 Introduction In order to conduct a substantial audit of Apollo Shoes the auditor must obtain a sufficient understanding of the entity and the entity’s environment, including the internal control. The understanding of the entity and its environment helps the auditor in a variety of ways throughout the audit, including establishing materiality, considering appropriateness, and designing audit procedures that can facilitate the growth of Apollo Shoes. Before the auditor can begin the process of conducting the audit of the inventory and warehousing cash cycles, the auditor must prepare the audit plan and program for Apollo Shoes. Developing the audit strategy and plan aids the auditor in determining the necessary resources to perform the engagement. The auditor must develop a plan in mind that will reduce audit risk to an acceptable level for the inventory and warehousing cash cycle. The audit plan should include a description of nature, timing, and extent of the planned risk assessment procedures. The audit plan and program significantly affects the types and extent of further audit procedures to be used by the auditor in determining whether the financial statements are fairly stated in accordance with the US GAAP. ...Business Requirements for ADCA 10/30/2013 Professor Dr. Phillip Duncan Strayer University CIS 499 Information Systems Capstone Business Requirement Plan Currently our system consist of SQL database sitting on 5 Cisco servers onsite. I plan to have that changed to oracle databases in a virtual world and out sourcing the cloud storage. Our current data warehouse is at ten terabytes. This is expected to increase by twenty percent a year therefore this must also be taken into account when searching for a provider of cloud storage. This will save on cost of equipment and also space. This savings of cost and space will be used to hire more technical personnel such as an oracle database administrator and a JavaScript programmer. We currently are running windows 7 but will be upgrading to windows 8 because it is better suited to the virtual world than windows 7. In regards to infrastructure and security, right now we have a basic to average network set up with a DMZ for our clients and intranet with a few firewalls. Not much can be done since we are running a SQL database. This will change when we upgrade to oracle. More security on the network and our client’s information will now be able to be applied. We will also create and maintain a backup center located off site. This center will not be cloud based but an actual server room. We will have to address that privacy issues associated with using a JavaScript method instead of log files to maintain the sites. ......
