Three indices were used for the analysis of abundance and diversity of the collected periphyton. The Shannon’s diversity index (H) (Shannon & Wiener, 1949) is a diversity index that is used to characterize species or genera diversity and account for their abundance and even the evenness. A high value of H would represent a diverse and equally distributed community and lower values would represent the opposite. A value of 0 would represent a community with just one species. Based on the periphyton and macroinvertebrate statistical analysis (Figs. 3 and 5), both streams had exhibited a value of H that is higher than 1. Meanwhile, Gomphonema is capable of producing longer or shorter stalks to accommodate to different flow rates. Both these organisms have been noted as the most frequent and quite abundant species in a shallow lake (Ács & Buczkó, 1994; Janse van Vuuren et al. 2006). Fragilaria occurs as benthic forms in streams and lakes while Denticula can be found in rather diverse habitats such as in carbonate rich waters or large oligotrophic lakes. (Janse van Vuuren et al. 2006; Spaulding & Edlund, 2008). The last four genera only occurred in fewer amounts, compared to the first four genera described. Almost similar in appearance, Gyrosigma and Pleurosigma are genera that can be found growing at the bottom of lakes or reservoirs, but they can float up to the surface and be brought along by the current. Thus, they are strongly correlated to velocity. The same applies to Achnanthes and Gomphanema as they are capable of adapting to changes in water velocity. Microspora is a genus that forms large green filaments with reticulate chloroplasts. More often found, it is found in gently flowing streams thus velocity also is correlated with it.
