Have you ever lived in fear and thought about working for free each day? In the fantastic book Stones in Water by Donna Jo Napoli. In the book Stones in Water Roberto, Enzo, and their brothers are removed from a movie theater and are taken to a concentration camp. Roberto and Enzo get in trouble in the first camp and are moved to a second concentration camp where they are required to work more. In this concentration camp they are fighting for survival. They meet two jewish girls and are caught sneaking food to them and almost lose their lives over it. Later in the story Enzo ends up dying and before he dies he tells Roberto to keep moving forward to survive. Roberto ends up escaping from the camp finds an empty town and is able to stay there for a few nights. He finds a younger boy in this town and they work together to survive by cooking food and finding supplies to keep them alive. A significant passage that connected to the theme finding light in the darkness is, “Roberto stood in knee-deep water and watched Enzo. His heart beat so hard his chest moved up and down. All eyes were on Enzo, eyes that they had tried so hard to hide from up till now. If people kept …show more content…
It can relate to anyone in different country that still have slavery and have to work. According to researchers today there is still 29 million people that are still slaves working under there will. Near the beginning of the book the author states, “A plane landed in the middle of the night. Roberto heard the engine and then the confusion outside. “Go back to sleep” Said Enzo “If there's work to do they will wake us up” (Napoli 54). This shows how they were woken up in the middle of the night and may had to go work. This was free labor and it was terrible and it it a problem in the world today. By Donna Jo Napoli.This book was about a boy named roberto who was going to see a movie with his friends and got pulled out of the movie theaters and taken away from his family and brought to a concentration camp.Who then had to find a way to survive it. The passage I chose was “He pointed to the shore and said something. Then he walked to the edge of the wood and blew the whistle. The boys hurried to line up. Roberto came out of the water slowly, with Enzo close behind and off to the side and away from the other boys.”Didn’t you love it?” whispered Enzo. “For a little while I pretended I was home” “ Love it?”(Napoli 50). The theme of this novel is finding light in the darkness. This was demonstrated when Roberto experienced how his friend was thinking of memories about water and his family. He thought about the water because he had to go into the lake. He found light in the darkness by thinking of a happy time in his life during a bad time to help him think about his family. So from him remembering that it made it more fun and he stayed a little more calm....
