Born in May of 1862 in the small town of Houcktown, Ohio, William Ellsworth Hoy was one of five children. Like many children, William was born hearing, but unfortunately contracted meningitis at the young age of three years, eventually becoming both deaf and mute. Such an obstacle could not, and did not, stop William Hoy from pursuing a regular lifestyle; in 1872, he entered the residential Ohio School for the Deaf, and went on to graduate in 1879 at the top of his class. Confiding to the norms of his town and era, Hoy opened a shoe shop in his town. In his downtime, he would play baseball outside of his shop with the local neighborhood children. While meaninglessly showcasing his talents outside of his shop, his skillset was recognized, earning him an invitation to play for a team in Kenton, Ohio, …show more content…
Especially on fly balls, communication is key to ensure that the outfielders do not collide. One of Dummy’s fellow outfielders, Tommy Leach, once gave his input on playing with Hoy in the outfield; “You listened for him and if he made this little squeaky sound, that meant he was going to take it" (sabr). Playing with Dummy Hoy had many advantages, which clearly outweighed the few, minor disadvantages. The disadvantages, which were easily overcome by adapting to the play of Hoy, did not effect the team negatively. The advantages, however, were numerous, and contributed a great deal of success to the team’s record. Hoy was speedy, had a strong throwing arm, and was a very good hitter. Hoy’s high baseball IQ and overall feel for the game made him an elite athlete, even at the professional level. In 1902, Dummy Hoy faced off against Dummy Taylor, a deaf pitcher. Before beginning the at-bat, the two had signed “hello” to each other, then proceeded to continue with the game. Years later, the friendship had rekindled at an Ohio State Softball

Determinants of International Trade

...UNDERSTANDING THE DETERMINANTS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN AFRICAN COUNTRIES: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS FOR GHANA AND SOUTH AFRICA   LAURA MÁRQUEZ-RAMOS Universitat Jaume I Instituto de Economía Internacional ABSTRACT There are clear economic differences between developed and developing countries that lead to a different behaviour among them in the determinants of bilateral trade flows. Although a number of authors have focused on the determinants of the trade patterns, further research is needed for a better understanding of what goods and with which countries developed and developing economies trade. This paper focuses on the determinants of international trade in African countries. From an empirical perspective, two African economies, a developed (South Africa) and a developing country (Ghana) are analysed. Moreover, sector-heterogeneity is considered. Results show that determinants of trade have a different impact in developed and developing African countries. Geographical and social factors play a key role on trade relationships in South Africa. Moreover, technological innovation in importer countries leads to higher exports from this country. However, Ghana’s exports are higher when they are addressed to countries with higher levels of economic freedom. ...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...
