Every country has their own culture. Different cultures mean that there will be different food, clothing, music, and types of learning in an educational situation. As more people have immigrated to America they have brought their culture with them. There are many different types of early childhood education that come from around the world to the United States including Montessori, Waldorf, and the Emilia approach. A more popular type of early childhood education is Montessori. Montessori is a way of encouraging children to be hands on while they learn. This way of learning came from a woman named “Maria Montessori [who] developed an innovative teaching methodology for children” (Holfester ). She was an Italian physician and educator in the …show more content…
The hand on experiences did not go well in Italy, it was not until Dr. Nancy Rambusch found interest in the Montessori Method and decided to create the American Montessori Society in 1960 (Holfester). After the United States took interest Montessori was the new way of learning for children ages 2 through six years old. Every mother wanted to have their child in a Montessori-based education because it had a purpose to educate the child. The classrooms have very few rules, the child can walk around the class as they please, and the child was not given deadlines for material that was due (Holfester). Allowing very few rules and no deadlines it allows for the child to become independent, responsible, and imaginative at a young age. Waldorf is a way of learning in which the teacher teaches the children in three stages for the development for the child. It came from a man named “Rudolf Steiner [who] specifically founded the school for children of Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory workers” (Nordlund 3). Rudolf was a German philosopher in the early twentieth century and believed children develop in three different stages with practices. Rudolf describes that the first stage, from 0-7 years old, the child learns through being physical with their surroundings. Students of the first stage are encouraged to “learn through student-centered physical explorations, creative play, and imitation of adult actions” (Nordlund 3).This type of learning helps the child to mature and use their imagination with no boundaries. It also, encourages the child and family to consider art as a way of learning, rather than the more traditional way of classroom learning. Parents should consider the Waldorf learning method because the students are encouraged to wonder and each school has creativity flowing through it. Unlike other early childhood education approaches Waldorf is “not [bounded] by the federal mandates” (Nordlund 2) leaving the teachers to pay more attention to the student’s development to support the child.
