By, Eric Berne Book Review by Suresh A M, I semester, MBA, JSSCMS Eric Berne was a psychoanalyst who became well known in the 1970s for his system of "transactional analysis", the transactions in question being mostly those between a young child and its parents. He proposed various structures for this relationship based on the roles parent/adult/child that every person plays and presents life stories as scripts that can be good or bad. This book is considered by many to be Eric Berne's sequel to Games People Play. Although Berne published other books since Games People Play was released in 1964, most of those works were oriented towards those trained in psychotherapy and not towards the individuals who made Games People Play a two-year bestseller. The book is his last book completed just before his death in 1970. Berne's bad luck was that he wrote the book in 1970 when psychology was going through a bad patch with a flood of bizarre systems appearing. The good gets lost with the bad and transactional analysis now tends to be labeled as an outmoded California fashion related to Freudianism. Public schools were instituted; blacks became citizens, and some whites even offered support with the civil rights movement. However, every opportunity that was given to the free blacks was met with much opposition. As a result, more could have been done. The late 19th century was a troubling time, and although freed slaves were negatively impacted, Whites, and Indians were also affected by the economical hardships. Several events occurred which gave me cause to agree with Eric Foner’s description of the Reconstruction as a “splendid failure”. ...Chariots of Fire Kenwood Huh Chariots of fire portrays the life of two runners, desiring to win in the Olympic games. The runners, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, both have different ambitions which drive them to win the race. Eric Liddell is a devout Christian who opposes to run on Sunday to keep it holy while Harold Abraham would run on any day for the sake of winning. When Harold and Eric ends up racing before the Olympic games, Eric wins which causes Harold to lose confidence in running. However through this trial, Harold regains his spirit with the help of coach Sam. From here on, the film continues to focus on both of these characters back and forth as they struggle to win in the end while at the same time hold to their standards and beliefs. The love story revolves mostly around the underdog, Harold Abraham with Sybil Gordan. In the end, Harold wins his race and Eric who chooses not to run on Sunday, ends up running on a different day for the 400 metres and wins his race also. In the end, both runners show respect for one another which portrays a theme of both friendship and rivalry. There are many themes that run along the movie such as the struggles that come along with perfection, competition, and a longing to be recognized and accepted. ...The University of Redlands Wind Ensemble, directed by Eddie R. Smith, put on a show at the Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, November 16th. Walking into the monumental Chapel I was unsure of what to expect. As I walked in I saw the amazing artwork around, the high ceilings, and a wide variety of instruments scattered on different levels of the stage. On the first level there were many small hand held instruments such as flutes and clarinets, on the second there were a wide variety of brass instruments, and finally in the last row were the percussion instruments. Knowing that it was a wind ensemble and not a traditional orchestra like the ones we have been made familiar with during this course, I was unsure of what to expect. I thought that it would be long and drawn out but I thought that I would not hate it and be able to at least respect the quality of music even if its not exactly my favorite genre. Much to my surprise, it was relatively short (only about 45 minutes) and was relatively interesting. I found myself tapping my foot to the music and enjoying the sounds very much. I was very impressed by the talent that these young men and women had, especially after hearing that they had prepared for this show in only three weeks. The first song that was played was Henry Fillmore’s “The Crosley March”. Right when I had walked in the show started and I could immediately tell the song being played was the first of the night. They probably all say how they’ve loved animals ever sense they were young and how this has been there dream ever sense they were little, now I’m going to tell you why I feel like I deserve this scholarship. Yes, ever sense I was a little girl I’ve wanted to be an animal cop and yes this is my dream, but I’ve worked hard for this dream. I love to help animals in need. Some people say that some animals don’t deserve a home but I feel like some people don’t deserve an animal. I have over 300 hours at my local animal shelter and it is just sad on why some animals come into the shelter neglect, abuse, and just the fact they don’t want them anymore. What I’ve learned is people want babies so we are stuck with a lot of older animals at the shelter. Every animal deserves a second chance its just takes one person to save a life and I want to be the one who help them find each other. I am also an animal foster parent. I take home animals that are either to young to go up for adoption or hurt. Sadly not all the animals make it, I’ve actually brought home two foster kittens a week later one pasted away then a week after that the second one pasted.
