Most people receive the question,”Who are you?” at some point in time. Out of all those people that were asked this question, almost all of them will answer with their name, but that is wrong, they are more than a name, a label, a signature on a paper. The real answer is revealed in a conversation between Every Hammond and V from V for Vendetta: “‘Who are you?’ asked Every Hammond.’Who? Who is but a form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask,’ V replied.” The face is a mask used to cover one’s soul and the eyes are the only true way to see someone’s true colors, and as seen in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack are hidden behind their mask. In fact, Ralph arrived there with a “mildness about his eyes and mouth that proclaimed no devil” (Golding, William 10). The eyes that proclaimed no devil showed how innocently civil they were in the beginning. They found a shell, they called an assembly, they formed their own society; it was a society of rules and people working together to get rescued. All of it was so pure, like the whites of their eyes. The people within the society were the only reason their new civilization was not so pellucid. For what seems like no reason at all, humans seem to like staining other humans with their judgement, and their ridiculing, and their complete disregard for the feelings of them. That personality can be related to the iris of the …show more content…
Both are “like moths on a tree trunk” (63). Ralph and Jack have very different moths; however, both are effective. Ralph’s moth happens to be the conch and Jack’s was his second mask, his first being his face. Ralph used the conch to help create his chief-like persona that helped him lead the others, and the others followed him because the conch made him seem more powerful than he was. Jack used his second mask to keep him “safe from shame or self-consciousness” (140). This enabled him to act all-powerful and control his followers while hiding his truest self. No matter how hard they try to hide it, society eventually sees through an individual’s pupil and into their quintessence.
Just as the society of boys could see the real Ralph and Jack towards the end of

Death Penalty

...Death Penalty and Politics Research Paper Danica Misic The Death Penalty and Politics Introduction The death penalty seems like a dreadful phrase at first glance, especially for those who are facing it. People convicted and sentenced to the death penalty usually have a long wait ahead of them. Some of these people facing the death penalty are looking forward to their execution, and some are dreading it. What exactly is the death penalty? To some it may be freedom once carried out, and to others it is retribution, a political tool, a means for producing money, or a deterrent for future crimes. It is important that the United States come to some conclusion so we can end the death penalty debate; we want the truth, not assumptions that can be argued to no end. This paper will discuss the ins and outs of the death penalty, why it has created much debate, why it is not a deterrent of murder, and that it is mostly used as a political tool. There have been many studies done to both effects; the death penalty deters crime, or it does not deter crime because the previous studies were flawed. First presented is a brief history to better understand where the death penalty comes from. The next section will discuss the modern approaches to the death penalty including landmark cases that changed the way the death penalty is executed in the United States. Following this section is an explanation of deterrence and its effects, and other controversies that exist. Finally...
