Grimm Vs. Disney
“Then she was forced to put on the red-hot shoes, and dance until she dropped down dead,” (Grimm). The original Grimm stories are often forgotten as Disney takes its glory. Grimm stories show more of the truth in real life as Disney fills the story with false hopes and often misleads people to believe in happy endings. Disney is far more popular for their musical themes and happy endings. This, however, gives false belief and rips off the original stories by the Grimm Brothers which are more relatable standards from that point in time. Disney and Grimm's stories go back and forth, although Grimm gives more real life expectations, Grimm stories are better by the differences with Disney, and Disney ruined the Grimm stories. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow only fell for the Queen's evil ways once (01:09:50-01:15:40). However, in the story, she fell for her three times, although Snow didn’t know because the Queen changed her appearance each time. “Little snow-white looked out and said, go away, I cannot let anyone come in. I suppose you can look, said the old woman, and pulled the poisonous comb out and held it up,” (Grimm). This is one of the many examples of the differences between story and movie. Others would be the Queen wanting to eat Snow’s lung and liver and then trying to kill Snow three times, with lacing up her dress and suffocating her, using a poisonous comb, and then the famous poisonous apple. “Kill her, and bring me back her lung and liver as a token,” (Grimm). Another is how the Queen dies or how Snow meets the Prince. However, there are changes to the story that makes the movie show brighter aspects. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow gets to know the dwarfs and met the Prince before she was cast away from the kingdom. Snow meets the Prince one day while she is collecting water from the well and singing (00:03:35-00:06:58). She also makes friends with the dwarfs and sings and dances with them (00:52:03-00:59:00). Most of the movie is made up of loving attributes when the originals are life-related and cruelty that comes with it. In the movie, Snow White can only be woken by true love's kiss. The Evil Queen’s only flaw is when the Prince finds Snow sleeping and kisses her right away. (01:20:30-01:21:30). This is very unrealistic to today's standards and is unlikely to ever happen. While in the Grimm stories the Prince wants to keep her as a decoration for her beauty and his guard happened to trip and knock the poisonous apple out of her throat. “And now the king's son had it carried away by his servants on their shoulders. And it happened that they stumbled over a tree-stump, and with the shock the poisonous piece of apple, which snow-white had bitten off came out of her throat,” (Grimm). However, Disney didn’t completely change the story for their pleasures for happiness. Snow White still meets the seven dwarfs and she still gets the guy. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow is set free from the huntsman (00:07:45-00:09:25) and she also meets the dwarfs and falls asleep connecting to the story, (00:15:20-00:47:48). “The dwarfs said, if you will take care of our house, cook, make the beds, wash, sew and knit, and if you will keep everything neat and clean you can stay with us and you shall want for nothing,” (Grimm). In this Snow White still looks after the house and cleans and she is also set free from the huntsman.
