The town is waiting to see Hester and watch her as she stands on the scaffold for three hours while the town looks upon her, wearing a scarlet 'A' on her bosom as her punishment. The women of the town discuss the harsher punishments they would have given her, proclaiming that "this woman has brought shame upon us all" and declaring she "ought to die" (Hawthorne 49).When Hester exits the prison and a town beadle offers her help, "she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and own free-will" (49). Whilst in the plays the protagonists’ obsession leads to the destruction of relationships with loved ones, in the novel a thwarted relationship leads the main character to develop dual unhealthy relationships with women. The first sees him obsessed with his lost first love and the second is a sexual addiction spanning more than 600 ‘conquests’. Whilst Mother Courage and Florentino are both driven by obsession, these vary in their focus. Mother Courage lives in the time of the Thirty Years war and runs her own cart selling wares to the armies to survive and support her children. This business and the pursuit of money becomes an obsession for her. On page 73, Scene 9 Mother Courage declares: “Sometimes I sees meself driving through hell with me cart selling brimstone, or across heaven with packed lunches for hungry souls. Her life in Los Angeles has cleansed her from her youth—one that was dusty and full of useless trinkets. Basing her script on the short story “The Bear Came over the Mountain” by Alice Munro, Polley had created a masterpiece. Julie Christie plays Fiona, a woman suffering from the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. She and her husband, Grant (Gordon Pinsent), have not been apart from each other for nearly four and a half decades, so understandably he takes it quite hard when she decides it would be best for her to enter into a nursing hope for people suffering from Alzheimer’s. Over the course of time, Grant becomes somewhat alarmed, and even a little jealous, over the strength of friendship that she develops with a fellow patient named Aubrey. As can be expected, Grant has to struggle to come to terms with this new relationship and with Fiona’s fading memory.
